"Peter Schifferdecker documents this Hieronymus as son of Veith Jauch, b. abt. 1594 Schwenningen.

Close look at marriage and death records appears to support the notion that Heironymous Jauch had three wives:
1. 1657: marries Anna Stillin-Staehlin; she dies 16 June 1661.
2. Then in 1661, he marries Maria Stenge; she dies 30 June 1682. [Can't decipher enough to see if this Hieronymous is identified as a widower.]
3. Then on 05 February 1683, he marries Magdalena Sichlaus? Sichland? dau of Hanss, maurer from Tuttlingen. (Hieronymus is identified as a widow.)

There is an entry in the "Inventur- and Teilungsbuch Schwenningens from 15. June 1683. [German text in documents attached to email.]

"About one year ago died Maria Stengin, wife of Hieronimus Jauchen, tailor, inhabitant in Schwenningen. She had together with her husband Hieronimus Jauch four children, named:
Christian, Maria, Anna, and Agathe, all still unmarried.
Furthermore he (Hieronymus Jauch) had with his previous wife, Anna Stellin, also two children, named:
Hannß, and
Ursula,
constante matrimonio begetted and leaved

This entry shows that Hieronymus Jauch was married 3 times.


Hieronymus Jauch didn't die in 1662 (this was my mistake). I think that your 15. May 1701 is the correct date.


The second woman Maria Stenge is the daughter of Martin Stenge from Tuttlingen (entry in the Inventur- and Teilungsbuch from 27. November 1771)

There is no birth record of Hieronymus Jauch. In 1635 (calculated year of birth) Schwenningen was destroyed from the soldiers of Villingen and the inhabitants flew.


Veith Jauch (born 1594) had a sister, Walldburga Jauch, the wife of Erhard Schentzlin. She died 1665. There is an entry in the Inventur- and Teilungsbuch from 25. April 1665, in which her brother Veith ist named with his 6 children: Michael, Jacob, Christian, Hieronimus, Martin and Agnes, die Jauch, all citizens in Schwennngen. From This entry I conlude that Hieronimus is the son of Veith."

"From Axel Bauder, email of 22 August 2004:
"In 1990, Manfred Reinartz (then director of the local museum) published in a book the most (but not all) of the 'Inventuren-u. Teilungen.' These are lists which were written down after the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) [in order to address] qutions of property ownership after the war and after deaths of persons [who died in the war]. The lists started in 1649 (three years before the parish register commenced). [The lists] contain personal dates and pecuniary circumstances about the inhabitants of Schwenningen, also about the individuals who had not survived the war. (In February 1633 Schwenningen was destroyed. The first inhabitants returned in autumn 1634.) [The lists document that:] On 1 April 1665 died Walburga Jauch agged 80 years. [The list indicates that] she was a sister of Veit Jauch. She had no children. Her heirs were the children of two dead sisters and the children of dead Veit Jauch. His children are mentioned as follows : 'Michael, Jakob, Christian, Hieronimus, Martin, Agnesa. Die Jauchen, alle verbürgert zu Schwenningen' (the Jauchs all living in Schwenningen) SO IN MY OPINION MICHAEL JAUCH IS THE SON OF VEIT JAUCH."

Before his marriage to Female Unknown, he apparently was married to Ursula Unknown (according to Peter Schifferdecker).

While a history indicates that Veit and his wife (whichever one) did not survive the 30-year war (which ended 1648), another source indicates that he sold his St. Georges property to his son Christian in 1656 for 926 fl. He is referred to as deased in the 1657 marriage record of his son Hieronymous.

He married Ursula UNKNOWN, married ABT 1617 in (based on age of child), b. ABT 1597 in (based on age of child), d. BEF 1660 in (referred to as deceased in 1660 death record of daughter). Apparently there were two wives.
We know for sure that Ursula was married to Veit by 1642, because their daugther Katherine is identified as Ursula's daughter on Katherina's 1652 death, which also indicates Katharine was 18.
