- Allen, John Howell - (Lt.2, Blk. 64, Sec. 2) John Howell Allen, oldest son of John W. and Mary A. Allen, was born in Hamburg, IA., September 9, 1854; died at the Lakin hospital, April 29, 1935. He, with his brother Albert, came to Kearny County in 1882 and engaged in the cattle business at the Allen Brothers ranch near Kendall. In 1885 they bought 4500 head of cattle in Texas and brought them to their ranch. Mr. Allen united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and held his membership until death. He abstained from use of tobacco and liquor and was esteemed an honest and honorable man by his neighbors. The life of Mr. Allen has been linked with the pioneer interest of many of the highly respected citizens of Kearny County, and it is with genuine regret that we mark his passing from our community.
He is survived by three children, John H. Jr., Albert L., and Kathleen, all living near Sailor Springs, IL., and one brother, Albert P. Allen of Kearny County.
Funeral services were conducted from the Lakin Presbyterian Church, Tuesday afternoon, April 30th, in charge of Rev. Thos W. Henshaw, and interment made in Lakin Cemetery.
