According to the 1870 and 1880 census for Noble, Illinois, he was born in Tennessee, possibly Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Warren E. McDowell's death certificate shows John was born in Tennessee.

  According to the 1880 census report, John was crippled. His parents came from Ireland. Somewhere in my research, I found his middle name of Holden, I'm sad to say that I failed to document the source of that information and am still looking for it.
