    Joanne Herdes, 59, of Clay City, died on Sunday, July 7, 2013, at her home.

    Joanne Herdes was born on March 22, 1954, in Clay County, Illinois, the daughter of Eugene and Mary (Scammahorn) Gray. She married Alan Herdes on July 15, 1972, at Sailor Springs Christian Church.

    Joanne was a member of Clay City Christian Church. She was an excellent and compassionate caregiver. She enjoyed cooking and collecting cookbooks. Joanne loved teaching and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by all those that knew her.

    She is survived by her husband, Alan Herdes; Daughter, Michele Anderson; Son, Michael Herdes; Mother-in-law, Eva Herdes; Grandchildren, Macie Kesner, Brooke Anderson, Devyn Kesner, Lydia Herdes, Macy Anderson, Megan Herdes, and Peyton Anderson; Brother, Mike Gray; Sister, Betty Stanford; and several nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her parents and father-in-law, Winfred Herdes.

    Memorials may be made to Clay City Christian Church.

    Graveside Service was at Clay City Cemetery, with Minister Darrell Brandon officiating.

    Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Clay City was in charge of arrangements.

    Mr. Herdes was born September 11, 1922 in Clay County, the son of James and Jennie Lee Herdes. He married Eva Schnautz September 8, 1945, in Flora. He was a retired farmer.

    Surviving are his wife; three sons, Roger, Richard, and Alan Herdes; two sisters, Iva Gaskin and Mildred Flannagan; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.

    Graveside services were held at the Clay City Cemetery. Summers-Kistler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Eva Fay (Schnautz) Herdes, 96, of Clay City, died March 30, 2019 at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney.

    Mrs. Herdes was born on September 6, 1922, the daughter of Orpha J. “Pete” and Nora C. (Prosser) Schnautz.

    She married Winfred Herdes on September 8, 1945 at the First Christian Church in Flora. He preceded her in death on February 18, 2000.

    Surviving are her three sons, Roger (Teresa) Herdes of Clay City, Richard (Ruth) Herdes of Clay City, Alan (Liz) Herdes of Clay City; eight grandchildren, Lori (Bryan) Draper, Michele (Larry) Anderson, Michael (Tessie) Herdes, Karl Herdes, Ryan Herdes, Miranda (Logan) Fleeharty, Andra Herdes, Ross (Katie) Herdes; fifteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

    Eva was a member of the Sailor Springs Christian Church. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, cooking and baking. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

    She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; twin sister, Neva Schnautz; brothers, Sherman Schnautz & John Schnautz; daughter-in-law, Joanne Herdes.

    Memorials can be made to Sailor Springs Christian Church.

    A graveside service will be held at Clay City Cemetery on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at 12:00 PM, with a visitation thirty minutes prior at the graveside.

    Mary E. Gray, 86, of Flora, formerly of Clay City, died at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at Flora Gardens Care Center.

    Mrs. Gray was born Jan. 3, 1922 in Bible Grove, the daughter of Samuel and Dolly Mae (Burgett) Scammahorn. She married Eugene Gray in February 1951 in Clay City. He preceded her in death in November of 1987. She was a homemaker.

    Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sharon Gray of Murphysboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Steve Stanford of Louisville, and Joanne and Alan Herdes of Clay City; three brothers, Norman Scammahorn of Okeechobee, Fla., Glen Scammahorn of Joliet, and Charles "Bub" Scammahorn of Clay City; one sister, Ninetta German of New York City, NY; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

    Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, one sister, Helen Rudder, and one grandchild, Brian Stanford.

    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Clay City i the Rev. Brad Harris officiating. Burial will be in Clay City Cemetery. Visitaion will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 19) at the funeral home.
