    He was a WWII U. S. Navy veteran, a retired tool pusher from PEP Drilling in Malvern, Ohio, and life member of VFW Post 2901, Cambridge, Ohio.

    Military Service:
    Entered active service on January 13, 1945. Completed boot camp at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois. Stationed at, served aboard, or assigned to (in turn), Naval Air Station, Norman, Oklahoma; Naval Air Station, Lambert Field, Saint Louis, Missouri; the Cleveland class, light cruiser USS Portsmouth CL-102; and Observation Squadrons VO-10 and VO-2, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia. Received a general discharge under honorable condition as an Apprentice Airman on December 16, 1948 at same station. Earned the American Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal for his service during the periods of eligibility.

    Dorothy Mitchell, 85, of Clay City, passed away at 5:58 pm on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at her home.

    She was born on August 16, 1935 in Clay City, the daughter of the late Albert “Duck” and Mildred (Holmes) Franklin. Dorothy married James “Cork” Mitchell on October 16, 1950 and he preceded her in death.

    Dorothy enjoyed time with her family, she liked antiques, going to flea markets and yard sales and always loved attending a good auction.

    She is survived by two grandchildren; James Derek (Charity) Mitchell of Clay City, Kyle Richard (Barbara) Mitchell of Ohio, a brother; Richard Earl Franklin of Odessa, Texas, four great grandchildren; Riley Melbar, Graham Mitchell, Oliver Mitchell and Theodore Mitchell and by several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by a son, James “Dickie” Mitchell, a granddaughter, Ashley Melbar and by two sisters, Wilma Laird and Mabel Sharp.

    Myrtle Mitchell, 85, of Clay City, died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at the Olney Care Center in Olney.

    Visitation and services will be held at Hosselton-Bookhout-Engelmeier Funeral Home in Clay City. Burial will be in the Clay City Cemetery.

    She was born Oct. 22, 1899, in Wayne County, the daughter of Samuel and Christina Shelby Penrod. She arried James Mitchell on Oct. 26, 1916 in Wayne County and he preceded her in death in 1964.

    She is survived by twp sons, J.C. Mitchell of Minerva, Ohio and Gary Mitchell of Findlay; four daughters, Mrs. ucille Sheraden of Fairfield, Mrs. Louella Sharp of Fairfield, Mrs. Evalyn Young of Clay City and Mrs. Hilah Nimnicht of Washington, Ind.; one sister, Frances Bunnage of Albion; 24 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sons and a daughter.

    She was a member of the Clay City Church of God.

    Mildred P. Hillderbrand was born on September 5, 1914 in Clay County, IL, the daughter of Pearly Holmes and Bessie Tolliver. She married Earl Franklin and later married Leonard White, he precedes her in death. She later married Forrest "Frosty" Hillderbrand, he also precedes her in death.

    Mildred volunteered at the Senior Citizens Center for many years and she participated in the Elder walks in Clay County. Mildred was a very faithful and active member in her church, both the Clay City Church of God and Flora Assembly of God. She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.

    She is survived by her son, Richard (Norma) Franklin; Daughter, Dorothy (Corvin) Mitchell;daughter, Lynn (Tom) Dorman; Daughter, Tawanna White; Daughter, Karen Miller; Stepson, Dennis Hillderbrand; Stepdaughter, Joanne Rogers; 15 Grandchildren, 39 Great Grandchildren, 13 Great Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Great Grandchildren; Sister, Thelma Welty; Several nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son, William White, daughter, Mable Sharp, daughter, Wilma Laird, and several brothers and sisters.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clay County Hospice.
