Facebook message from Gayla Tanner (June 27, 2014):

"I'm sorry I didn't post sooner, we've had problems reaching some family, and the day was chaotic.

Poppy passed away today at 2:55pm.

I had taken him to the hospital Wednesday after he ditched his car. He had a bad laceration on his arm, which he said he got falling into the dresser.

They admitted him because his sodium levels were really low. They said it could cause his pain and dizziness.

They X-rayed his chest to make sure he didn't crack a rib, but instead of a break they found a shadow on his lungs. They did a CT scan and it showed that he clearly had an advanced form of cancer.

We decided not to tell him what it was until this morning because my brother, Leon, and already left and we wanted the doctor there when we talked to him.

This morning the doctor told him his options and he insisted on going home. We started making arrangements with hospice.

At lunch he started choking. His lungs were filling up. They gave him some medication to help dry out hos lungs and to help him rest. While we were talking to the hospice coordinators he started to decompensate quickly. And then he simply stopped breathing.

It was all so fast we hadn't even told all of the family about the cancer before he was gone.

We will work out details for a visitation and funeral a little later, we all need to regroup after today."
