    Notes:

    Glayson "Rastus" Gray, 81, died on Friday, Nov. 16, 1990, at 6:39 p.m., at the Flora Nursing Center. Funeral services were Monday at the Hosselton, Bookhout, Engelmeier Funeral Home, Clay City. Burial was in Hanna Cemetery.

    Mr. Gray was born on March 4, 1909, in Mt. Erie, the son of William and Elizabeth (Yauch) Gray. He married Kathryn Eula Madding in 1936. She died in 1975.

    Surviving are three daughters, Lydia Taylor and Betty Curtis of Clay City, and Dixie Harper of Flora; two sons Robert and David of Flora; one sister, Lydia Graham of Olney; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two children, two step-children, two sisters, on half-sister and three brothers.

    In the 1880 Federal Census, Noble, Illinois, he is listed as a "Willie", a 6 year old ward of the state. His was born in Kentucky, his father was born in Indiana, the birth place of his mother is listed as unknown.

    According to the 1940 census, William had a 4th grade education.

    According to the 1940 census, Lizzie had a 2nd grade education.

    Elizabeth brought a daughter, Jennette B. "Nettie" Yauch into her marriage with William Gray.

    According to Elizabeth's obituary, she and William Gray were married on February 26, 1892.

    According to "Early Marriages of Richland County, Illinois 1840-1899", Volume 1, page 186, by Lola B. Taylor and "Richland County Marriages, 1840-1915, Grooms Book, Page #132, License #00020, Book #003, page #0202, Compiled by Richland County Genealogical and Historical Society November 15, 1993, they were married in 1893, (not 1892).

    The German spelling of his last name was "Jauch"

    Jacob allegedly in 1858, came to the United States as a stow-away on the ship Arlington. I have not yet documented this fact.

    Jacob Yauch came to the United States in 1858 from Wurtemburg (Wittenberg) Germany, as a stow-away on a ship, having no fee for his passage. He was 19 years old & soon volunteered to serve in the Civil War with the Co. D. 108th Ohio Infantry.

    His unit was overrun in 1862 at Hartsville, TN but he managed to survive the tragic ordeal.

    Returning home he met & married a young Swiss girl, Margaret Hasler, who was 19 at the time. She was born in Canton Berne, Switzerland and had come to America with her family at the age of two.

    Jacob took up farming as a livelihood settling in Richland County, IL near the Glenwood neighborhood.

    Jacob worked hard on his farm for his family which eventually grew to eight children. He & Margaret's first six children were girls; Elizabeth, Rose, Della, Sarah (Sally), Della again, & Lillie Mae. There were then two sons John & Jacob born.

    Jacob and Margaret lost four children in infancy including the first "Della", thus accounting for their naming another daughter Della in 1879.

    Jacob died in 1899 at the age of 60. He was buried in Hanna Cemetery in Richland County where he has a military marker.

    Margaret lived on until 1927, dying at the age of 78. She is also buried in the Hanna Cemetery.

    Margaret Hasler was born in Canton Berne, Switzerland.

    She came to America with her family at the age of two.

    She was 19 when she married Jacob Yauch.

    Margaret & Jacob's family eventually grew to eight children. She & Jacob's first six children were girls; Elizabeth, Rose, Della, Sarah (Sally), Della again, & Lillie Mae. There were then two sons John & Jacob born.

    According to the research done by Julius Billeter, Margaritha was born on September 28th, 1849. Other sources, including her obituary, show she was born on September 19th, 1849. Her tombstone only shows the years 1849 - 1927

    According to the 1900 Noble, Richland County Census, Margaret was born in September 1850 in Germany. The census shows both her parents were born in Germany.

    Her tombstone has the Americanized spelling of "Margret" Yauch.

    William C Madding son of Champion S and Elizabeth (Caple) Mading was born Smith Co., TN on 29 Jun 1819 and died 14 Mar 1874 in Edwards Co., IL, as a result of a blow to the head dealt by his step-son Christopher Hunt. Christopher and his mother, Susan were charged with his death and later acquitted. Susan was William's third wife.

    William first married Elizabeth, her maiden name unknown, together they produced two children. Thomas born ca 1841 and Champion born ca 1849.

    William then married Martha Hill on 29 Mar 1850 in Richland Co., IL and together they produced nine children, Mary Ann, Rebecca C, Jesse Calvin, William H, Francis M, Amanda, Ellen, James R, and Christina.

    He married a third time to Susan Emily Hill Hunt, 9 Mar 1867 in Edwards Co., IL and they had four children they are namely: Seymour, DeKalb, Isaac N and Leonard.

    William is buried in the north west corner of Macedonia Cemetery
