    Notes:

NOTES FROM STEPHEN GREGORY "STEVE" LUKE (1947-2002):
William L Green was born in Tenn. in 1837. While a teenager he and his parents moved to Illinois. They were staunch unionists and when the civil war broke out in 1861 William enlisted as soon as he was old enough, in 1865.
Almost all men joined the state forces(National Guard) during this war, but William joined the regular US Army which shows that in addition to being a unionist he wanted to be a soldier. The civil war ended in May 1865 and William almost definitely would have been sent west to help pacify those indians who had already been on the warpath prior to the war and those who had entered the warpath during the war, taking advantage of the distraction of the US Army. It is very feasible that William served in the Ks , Ok, Tx
Panhandle area against the Kiowa, Commanche, Cheyenne,Arapahoe, Plains Apache, Lipan Apache. The end of his 3 year hitch William left the Army 1868 and soon married and at the end of 1869 joined a wagon train to Linn Co Ks to settle on land vacated by the Iowa Indians(The Iowa moved to Lincoln Co Ok).
In 1891 William gained land in Lincoln Co Ok thru the Sept 1891 Land Run.
