Entered active service as a draftee on May 29, 1943 at Camp Grant, Illinois. Completed Basic Infantry Training and qualified in the military occupational specialty of Baker (017). Departed the Continental U.S. on November 30, 1943 bound for the Pacific Theater of Operations. Assigned to and served with Company 'F', 186th Infantry Regiment, 41st 'Jungleers' Infantry Division in the New Guinea Campaign. Earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 bronze battle star, WWII Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. Honorably discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade on February 2, 1946 at the Separation Center, Camp Grant, Illinois.

Notes:

Eva Grace (Wyatt) Herdes, 95, of Olney, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at her home.



Eva was born on April 10, 1928 in Wayne County, Illinois, the daughter of Oscar William and Merl (Ellis) Wyatt. She married CJ "Junior" Herdes on September 12, 1946 in Morganfield, Kentucky, and he preceded her in death on October 24, 1989.



Eva had many hobbies, including making quilts, and she had made over 400 quilts in her lifetime. She also enjoyed basket weaving and took pleasure in teaching others how to weave baskets as well as making quilts. Her other hobbies were embroidery, crocheting, and fishing.



Eva especially enjoyed spending time with her family and her house was always open to family and friends.

She was also a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Wendelin.



Eva is survived by her children, Donna Oaster and husband Larry of Maryville, IL; Dena Fulk of Noble, IL; Dennis Herdes and wife Diane of Noble, IL; Darla Means of Newton, IL; Donald Herdes and wife Trudi of Noble, IL; 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild; brother, Noel Wyatt of Clay City, IL; and several nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her husbands, CJ Herdes and Leroy Klingler; parents, siblings, Lucille Kauble, Bernice Kauble, Neil Wyatt, Billy Wyatt, twin sister, Neva Slankard, and son-in-laws, Roy Fulk and JR Means.



Visitation will be held for family and friends on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Church Parish Hall in Wendelin and on Thursday morning from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Holy Cross Catholic Church Parish Hall.



Interment will follow the mass at Clay City Cemetery in Clay City.



Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney is assisting the family with arrangements.



Memorials can be made to Charity of your choice or Holy Cross Catholic Church.Grace
