"Shoots His Wife Thinks Her a Burglar"

"A tragedy, that brought forth the deepest sympathy of the entire community, was enacted at the Harry Ayers home, south east of Foster, Monday evening at about 10 o'clock, when Mr. Ayers mistook his wife, aged 71, for a burglar and probably fatally wounded her with a .38 calibre revolver.

It seems that some one has been prowling around the Ayers home lately and removed several articles of value. Tiring of this, Mr. Ayers decided to use harsh means to stop it, so loaded up his gun in readiness for the next visit of the prowlers. Mr. Ayers had it understood with his wife that she should not get up in the night without telling him, but on Monday evening she did so not thinking.

Mr. Ayers, after a hard days work, had retired comparatively early in the evening and about 10 o'clock he heard a noise in the kitchen. Awakening from a sound sleep, he did not notice that his wife was not in bed beside him. He called out, but his wife being somewhat deaf, evidently did not hear him and came walking right up to the bed. When she was within a few feet of him, he fired, she falling into his arms. Realizing what he had done, he placed the prostrate body in a chair and ran screaming to his nearest neighbor, J. D. Nichols for help. When he had informed Mr. Nichols of the accident he ran frantically back home.

Dr. Langmack was summoned and found that the bullet had entered the body just above the heart, passed through a portion of the lung and lodged in the back. Keeping vigil all night long, Dr. Landmack had the wounded woman removed to the Lebanon Hospital Tuesday morning where she is in a very critical condition."
