Iva D. Brassie-Turner, 84, of Olney, died at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2001, at Olney Care Center in Olney.

Burial will be in Maple Dale Cemetery in Olney.

Mrs. Turner was born on May 16, 1917, in Richland County, the daughter of John Will and Margaret "Maggie" (Fleanor) McDowell.

She married Lloyd A. Brassie in 1935. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of Church of the Nazarene in Olney, Eastern Star, VFW and American Legion.

Mrs. Turner is survived by four daughters, Linda Lou Johnson, of Thomasboro, Donna Rae Brassie, of Olney, Sandra K. Pennington, of Newton, and Karen S. Osborn, of Searcy, Ariz.; a son, Robert Leo Brassie, of Houston, Texas; and 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and several brothers and sisters.

The 1900 census for Noble, Illinois lists him as J.W. & his wife as S.M.

John was Illiterate, but spoke English.

According to Edna (McDowell) Wilson, he is buried in Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney, Richland County, Illinois. NOTE by Carl Wayne Gray: As of Nov 16, 2009, I have found no record of his burial.

On January 18, 2010, Jim Michels researched the Olney burial records and discovered the following: "John William McDowell is buried about 75 or 100 feet away from Sarah. There is no tombstone. He is in lot 1747, the south half of the north half. The owner of his plot is listed as Blanche Pickle. He is buried next to Joseph Von Almen who is just to his south and does have a tombstone.
According to the city records, there never was a tombstone for John McDowell.They only list a "stabber"; that is the little metal name tag that the funeral home marks the grave with. It is long gone."

Census records have him being born in 1851 and so do the Sexton's Cemetery records. The cemetery records state that he was 83 years old at death on 4 Jun of 1934.

The Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 has his birthdate as 15 Sep 1850

According to the 1880 census report, John was crippled. His parents came from Ireland.

Somewhere in my research, I found his middle name of Holden, I'm sad to say that I failed to document the source of that information and am still looking for it.

According to Eric Hunley's research on http://erichunley.com/family/gedmoreinfo.cfm?IndID=269 William Holden McDowell was born in Ireland on 9 Oct 1824 and "CAME TO U.S. FROM IRELAND BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR (1850-1855)."

According to the 1870 and 1880 census for Noble, Illinois, he was born in Tennessee, possibly Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.

Warren E. McDowell's death certificate shows John was born in Tennessee.
