He was a retired Army veteran who served in World War II an also was retired from the B & O Railroad. He was a member of the Catholic church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was born July 10, 1919, at Poe Station to Henry and Mary (Memerick) Kissen. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (McDowell); two sons, Rick Kissen of Lawrenceville and Roger of Sumner; three stepsons, John Aldridge of Sanford, Fla., and James and Thomas Aldridge of Olney; a stepdaughter, Janet Andrews, Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Melba Burgdorf, Bridgeport; one grandson, nine step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. She was a former nurse's aide for Burgin Nursing Home. Her husband, John "Ike" Clevy, is deceased. Survivors include a son, John E. Cogswell Sr. of Bridgeport; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Bridgeport City Cemetery by Brother Bill Cox. 1005 | Brigadier General John D. Deaton John Deaton, fondly called Colonel John, Dad, and Grandpa, passed away on May 30, 2023, at the age of 74. John was born in Effingham, Illinois, on December 21, 1948, to Edone L. and Modena (Faudree) Deaton. During his childhood, his family relocated often due to his father's career in oil production, but his family finally settled in Olney, Illinois. John graduated from East Richland High School, where he excelled in football, baseball and music, and made lifelong friendships with Wally Eyman, Rick Stivers, and Frank Wasick. Shortly after graduation, John entered community college, where he met the love of his life, Lila. John knew a good thing when he found one so he asked Lila to spend her life with him. They married in March 7th 1970. John continued his education at Eastern Illinois University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education with a focus in Political Science and History in 1971. He was also a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He joined the United States Air Force and flew as a navigator for the KC-135 air tankers and was an instructor for KC-135s. Although his career in the Air Force allowed him to see the world, he was also stationed at the Pentagon, Joint Base Andrews, and finally as part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. John also served in the United States Air National Guard of Illinois, where he was promoted to Brigadier General after 28 years of service. Upon retirement, John started his own business. John loved his wife, children, and grandchildren unconditionally. He enjoyed being part of the community, visiting friends and family, and attending class reunions. He loved spending time with his kids and grandchildren whenever he could, whether it was attending games, school events, theater productions, fishing, or going to the beach. He loved attending car shows with his Roadrunner. He was also an active church member at St. Matthews Catholic Church, served as a soccer and baseball coach, and as a Boy Scout leader. He was preceded in death by his parents Edone and Modena Deaton, and his grandson, SGT. Alex Adkins. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 53 years, Lila, his children, Christine (Donald) Adkins, Matthew (Andrea) Deaton, John Patrick Deaton, Rebecca (Shawn) Rechkemmer, and William Deaton, 14 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, his sister Linda (Gary) Mariconi, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the Old Fort Myer Post Chapel. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. 1011 | Brooklyn Hope Armstrong, 16, of Carlinville passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013, in Peoria County, as a result of an automobile accident. Brooklyn was born November 2, 1997, in Litchfield, IL, a daughter of Bryan and Kristy Ann (Lewis) Armstrong. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Teresa Bentley Brooklyn was a Sophomore at Carlinville High School. She was a cheerleader, played soccer, volleyball, member of the track team as well as played in the high school band and served on the student council. Brooklyn attended the Cross Church in Carlinville. She was fun, and funny. Brooklyn was a joy to be around, and loved by many people. She was bubbly and talkative. She was one of those types of people who never met a stranger. Her smile, energy, and personality was encouraging and uplifting. Everyone loved her. Surviving are her father, Bryan Armstrong, mother, Kristy Ann (step-father Andrew) Armstrong-Ott, sister, Ashley (Daniel) Witzel, brother, Matthew Armstrong, brother, Michael Armstrong, sister, Kaylei LaLone, sister, Taylor Rice, step-sister, Amber (Jeff) Saathoff, step- brother, Jacob Ott, step-brother, Josh (Emily) Ott, step-brother, Andrew Ott. 1026 | Bruce Alan Sharp, age 35, of Clay City, Illinois, passed away Saturday evening, December 14, 2024, at Clay County Hospital. He was born December 25, 1988, in Olney, the son of Richard Wayne and Vicky Lynn (Basinger) Sharp. Bruce was a graduate of Clay City High School class of 2007, where he was nominated most talkative. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and went on to further his education, earning a bachelors degree from Millikin University. Bruce was currently employed as a truck driver for Warrior Trucking in Clay City. He was the greatest dad to his children and shared with them his love of racing and Nascar by taking them to watch races any time he had the chance. He enjoyed hunting for deer and rabbits, fishing, especially catfishing, and playing softball for the civics league in Clay City. He is survived by his wife: Jessica Sharp of Clay City; 4 children: Waylyn Alan Sharp, Raymond Bruce Sharp, Logan Marshall Sharp, and Autumn Rayne (Trenton) Denoncour; grandchildren: Asher and Hayden; 2 sisters: Alysa (Tyler) Botkin of Olney and Haley Sharp of Harrisburg; a brother: James Sharp of Harrisburg; father: Richard Sharp of Clay City; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was greeted in Heaven by his mother: Vicky Sharp, and his maternal grandparents: Walter and Freda Basinger. A funeral ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with Brandon Duvall officiating. Military funeral honors will be presented at the conclusion of the ceremony. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. He served his country in two branches of service, first the U.S. Navy and then the U.S. Army. He was a retired oil field worker and consultant. 1034 | Buelah G. Rapp, age 91, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at her home in Flora. Buelah was born October 3, 1925, in Clay County, the daughter of Harry and Grace (Barr) Goad. She married Bill Rapp on December 21, 1946, in Morganfield, Kentucky, and together they shared 62 years of marriage. Buelah worked for several stores in Flora over the years where she enjoyed visiting and working with the public. She was a member and past president of Flora VFW Post #3999 Auxiliary, and a member of Flora American Legion Post #14 Auxiliary. Buelahs great grandchildren brought her joy and she looked forward to and enjoyed going on rides in the country. She is survived by her daughter: Judy Beard; two grandchildren: Randy Beard (Michelle Wilkins) and Staci Houston; three great-grandchildren: Taylor Harmon (Dylan Shroyer), Miayah Houston, and Ethan Houston; two brothers-in-law: Mark Powless and Maurice (Paula) Rapp; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son: Daniel; one brother: Harry Goad Jr.; and two sisters: Opal Powless and Norene Sessions.
