Stephen W. Ames

Stephen W. Ames, 76, of West Bend, died on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004 at the Subacute Unit of the Samaritan Health Center.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1928 in Danville, Ill. to the late Thomas and Lyda (nee Prosser) Ames.
Shortly after graduation from Danville High School in January, 1946, Steve entered the U.S. Army, serving with the Occupational Forces following World War II.

After his discharge, he settled in West Bend and married LaVerne Gundrum on Nov. 24, 1951 at Holy Angels Catholic Church.
He was employed as a mechanic for his brother-in-law at Seefeld Motors for a short time. In 1958 he started working for the city of West Bend as a vehicle mechanic until retiring in 1990.

As a hobby, Steve built and repaired musical string instruments.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union and was a charter member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church where he served on the parish council.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Julie (Gary) Halom of Superior, Russell (Stacy) of Beverly, Mass., Roy (Mary) of Broken Arrow, Okla., Janice (Brad) Lamers of Brookfield and Ellen (Dan) Hintz of Sussex; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Darlene (Tony) DaCosta of Acton, Mass., seven brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ruth Nennig, Walter (Helen) Gundrum, Paul (Carole) Gundrum, Mercia Gundrum, Norbert Hartmann, all of West Bend, Arlene Gundrum of New-hall, Calif. and Bruce McCray of Houston; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were three sisters and a brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.
Father Jeffrey Haines will be the presider, and burial will follow in Holy Angels Cemetery.
Visitation at the church only will be Thursday from 10 until 11:15 a.m.

Those who wish may give memorials to "Blessed and Called" building fund at St. Frances Cabrini.
The Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.

Stephen's family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at St. Joseph's Community Hospital and the sub-acute Unit of the Samaritan for the kind and loving care given to Stephen during his illness

11026 “Big Stan” was born April 29, 1952, in Flora, the son of Harold Dean and Ida Frances (Sharp) Persinger.
