1853 | Deretha Geier, 100, passed away on September 17, 2024, in Olney, IL. Deretha Geier was born on July 8, 1924 in Clay County, IL, to Ferdinand Kessler and Stella (Dorn) Kessler. Deretha worked hard during her life. She grew up on the family farm in rural Clay County and in 1944, at age nineteen, she was working at the International Shoe Company-Olney. World War II was in high gear and Deretha felt the need to do her part to help the boys overseas. With the help of an Aunt and Uncle, she became employed as a Rosie the Riveter living in Wayne, Michigan in government housing and working 30 miles away at the Willow Run Airport Factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan through the summer of 1944. She worked as an electrician and later worked in Evansville, Indiana countersinking rivets during construction of B-24 "Liberator" bombers. Upon marriage, she worked on her family farm and later also worked as an office cleaner and nurse's aide. Throughout her life, she enjoyed gardening, making quilts, doing yard-work, and tending to her garden, trees, and shrub. Deretha is survived by son, Joseph Geier and wife, Deb of Noble; daughter, Anne Hahn and husband, Ken of Olney; son, Keith Geier and wife, Sue of Columbia, TN; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and a sister. The Graveside Service for Deretha Geier will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Crest Haven Cemetery. A time for visitation will be from 9:30-10:00 am at the cemetery. Burial will take place following services at Crest Haven Cemetery, Claremont, IL. 1854 | Derrell A. Brame Jr., 90, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 12:27 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 2021 at Liberty Village in Maryville. He was born August 26, 1931 in Drumright, Oklahoma, a son of the late Derrell A. and Thelma C. (Haught) Brame Sr. He married Phyllis M. (Hendricks) Brame on June 20, 1954 at the Naval Base in Alameda, California and she passed away on February 22, 2011. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country as an aerial photographer. He retired as the principal of the grade school with the Carlyle Community Unit School District #1. Derrell had served many years in education as a teacher with several school districts throughout the years. After his retirement, he enjoyed several years as an over the road truck driver. He was a member of Central Christian Church in Granite City and had been a longtime faithful member of the Carlyle Christian Church where he had served as an elder. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Derrell and Cindee Brame of Granite City; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas B. Brame and David A. Brame and two sisters, Donna Tate and Kate Clark. In celebration of his life, a memorial visitation will be held at the Central Christian Church, 2020 Johnson Road in Granite City on Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. until time of memorial service at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Derrell Brame officiating. 1864 | Dickie Ray Young, age 78, of Clay City, Illinois, passed away early Friday morning, February 21, 2020, at his home in the care of his loving family. He was born April 26, 1941, in Flora, and was the son of John Wesley and Beulah Ann (Wathan) Young. He was united in marriage to Frances K. Goings on August 8, 1959, in Clay City, and together they shared 46 years of marriage until she passed away July 5, 2006. Dicks life and love were his family, faith, and the oilfield. The people he considered family often extended to anyone who stepped through the door of his home, and he answered to grandpa from so many beyond his own grandchildren. Over the years, he worked for C.D. Reed, Doc & Tom Abner, and Shelby Britton. He went on to become a production man for Tandem Investments, and later retired from DakFam, Inc. He was a skilled welder, and his family will never forget his fondness for a variety of Little Debbie Snack Cakes . Dicks spirit of faith, personal mission, and belief in a new beginning were a cornerstone of his life. Dick and Frances were longtime members of the Clay City First Baptist Church where Dick served as Deacon. He is survived by three children: Charles Chuck Young of Clay City, Richard Young of Flora, and Teresa (Leslye) Young of Foley, AL; daughter-in-law: Lori Young of Marion, KY; grandchildren: Jill Young (Mark Lewis) of Clay City, Misty (Matt) Lindeman of Clay City, Mandy Sullens (Cody Jay) of Cisne, Heather (Caleb) Middleton of Kinmundy, Jessica Young (Travis Wilson) of Clay City, Sarah (Brandon) Tinsley of Marion, KY, Karl (Cheyenne) Young of Flora, John Robert Young of Olney, Steven Long of Clay City, Nathan (Brianne) Young of Clay City, Chris (Sierra) Young of Flora; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother: Eldon (Freida) Young of Watson; and two sisters: Kay Zech of Austin, TX, and Sue (John) Gay of Claremont. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Tom Young, Dean Young, William 'Bill' Wathan, Althea Dude Guinn, Bonnie Hayes, and Nita Stanley. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will follow in Clay City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
