3501 | Harry Curtis Stine, son of Albert E. & Lillie J. Stine, was born Jan. 20, 1879, near Cisne, IL, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Nellie Brock Sept. 24, 1902. Ten children were born to this union; one daughter, Nellie Vernetta preceded him in death. Those who live to mourn his departure are his companion, nine children: Johnie, Herbert, Newell, Estil, Virgil, Helen, Velma, Hazel, and Mrs. Cloyd Watson; a married son, Herbert; a sister, Blanch Stine; a brother Ira; three grandchildren and a number of relatives and friends. While he was a young man of 22 years of age he was converted and was united with Baptist church at Blue Point. For several years he taught in the public schools of Wayne County. 3503 | Harry H. Raley, 70, of Clay City, died Sunday at 10:30 p.m, in the Flora Nursing Center at Flora. The deceased was born August 1, 1870 in Clay County and lived his entire life in Clay County. He was a retired meat cutter, retiring in 1962 after being employed for many years at Murvin's store at Clay City. Funeral mass will be recited at the St. Steven's Catholic Church in Flora at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Father Alvin Grave as celebrant of the mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery, Flora. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today at the Easley Funeral Home at Clay City, where friends may call. He was married to Ruth Walsh, Feb. 15, 1936, Pontiac, Mich. 3504 | Harry Herbert SCHOTT was the son of Samuel Schott and Matilda Ann Taylor. He was a twin brother to Horace Howard Schott. His birth year is given as 1876 (1900 census), as well as 1875 (WWI draft card), and even 1874 (IL deaths). However, there is more overall supportive evidence for a birth year of 1876. He was married several times. According to his death certificate, he was buried in Oakwood Cemetery on 19 August 1946 (although his obituary says that he was to be buried in West Salem Cemetery). ~~~~~~~~~~~ Harry Schott Dies at Age 68 Harry Schott died at 8:00 a.m. today at home, 1004 south 22nd street, at the age of 68 years, one month and 27 days. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Myers Chapel, with the Rev. Ace Summers officiating, and burial will follow in West Salem Cemetery. The body will remain at Myers Chapel where friends may call after 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Schott was born June 19, 1874. On March 30, 1939 he was married to Flora Snow, who survives. Harry was born at their family home in rural Louisville on October 28, 1936, the son of Leland Valentine and Bessie Lucille (Abel) ODell. Harry spent most of his working life working with his father as a carpenter and later in life worked at Mikes Market in Louisville. Harry was a quiet man that like the simple pleasures in life, just sitting around watching a good tv show or going out for car rides in the country taking in all of nature's beaty. Harry is survived by his siblings: Larry (Mary) ODell of Flora, Tom ODell of Louisville, Nancy Palmer of Anderson, Indiana, Connie Jones (Max McKinney) of Louisville; and he is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Harry was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Billy ODell, Donnie ODell, Jimmy Cotton ODell, Brenda Sue Hale, and Betty Willis. 3511 | Harvey B. Engelmeier, 91, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at the Gardens in Flora, just one day after his 69th Wedding Anniversary. He was born the son of Frank, Sr. and Ellen (Dunigan) Engelmeier on December 9, 1923, in Flora. He married Wanda Jean Eaton on October 5, 1946 at the Christian Church in Flora, Illinois. He was a proud WWII veteran who served in the 7th Army 44th Infantry Batallion in the European Theatre of War. He was a retired lineman with the City of Flora Electric Department. He was a former Civil War Reenactor with the 15th Arkansas NW Volunteer Army CSA, participating in encampments all around the country. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather who will be sadly missed by all. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Jean Engelmeier; son and their other daughter Micheal (Kristal) Engelmeier; adopted son, Charlie Lee; Sister Bernadine Landreth; Grandchildren Kristy (Karl) Kramer, Brandii (John) Newby, Rodd (Jodi) Engelmeier; Great-Grandchildren Lizabeth, Allie and Bianca Engelmeier, Cody Houston, Brianna Newby, Kendrick and Kennedy Kramer, and Jonah and Bodee Woomer; and Great-Great-Grandson, Jace Harvey Engelmeier. 3513 | Harvey L. Biehl, 82, of Olney, Illinois, died on Monday, May 9, 2022 at his residence. Harvey was born on March 28, 1940 in Noble, Illinois, the son of Raymond and Ina (Fulk) Biehl. He married Sandra Lake on September 3, 1959 in Olney, Illinois, and she survives. Harvey worked in the oilfield for many years and later transitioned to Prairie Farms, where he retired. In addition, he had various home improvement jobs on the side. He took pleasure in making a profit by buying, trading, and selling anything he could make money on. Harvey was a big gardener and found peace sitting outside barefoot watching his garden grow alongside his beloved dog, Kubo. Harvey was an avid tinkerer, with a mechanical knowledge that surpasses his formal education. Harvey had a strong faith in the Lord and shared the good news with anyone who crossed his path. He enjoyed visiting and sharing the bible at The Masters Hands. 3516 | Havard A. Dasch, 93, of Olney, formerly of Noble, passed away on October 25, 2017 at Burgin Manor in Olney. He was born on September 14, 1924 in Clay County, IL. Havard worked in Evansville, IN for a short time before being drafted into the US Army during WWII. He served in France and Germany and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After returning home he worked for McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis. Havard was a pastor for over 50 years for the Olney Baptist Association. Havard briefly pastored and lived in Arizona, but he fell in love with the area. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and new cars. Havard is survived by his brother, Austin Dasch and wife Bernadine of Noble; Nieces and nephews, Charlotte Bickers, Sandra Harvel, Cindy Foerster, Loretta Sheppard, Steve Dasch, and Bruce Dasch; and several great nieces and nephews. 3523 | Hazel M. Hillyer, age 85, of Xenia, Illinois passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Odin Health Care Center in Odin, Illinois. Hazel was born November 30, 1928 in Rinard, Illinois to Thomas O. Strange Sr. and Millie Mary (Reynolds) Strange. She married Eugene J. Hillyer on September 6, 1947. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1980. Hazel worked as a cook and was also employed at the Shoe Factory and Sparton's. She later became an insurance agent, holding an insurance license for United American, and had a Ham Radio license, technician class. Hazel was a member of Xenia Christian Church and loved helping people. Quilting was very important to her and as a member of the Xenia "Helping Hands" Quilters, quilts were made and donated to Xenia Christian Church and Xenia Fire Department. She also enjoyed cooking, canning, and gardening. Hazel is survived by her daughter: Mary Ann Hillyer; her son: Dale E. Hillyer; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters (Virginia Paris, Eldon Strange, Thomas Strange, Beulah Langhans, Gaylen Strange, Lester Strange, Vera Wheeler, and Jennell Hillyer), and companion Frank Burkett. Her hobbies included handwork, embroidery, baking, cooking, gardening and her family. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Angie Jenkins, Jack and Cindy Jenkins, Randy and Sharon Jenkins; two daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine and Everette Maxwell, and Sandy and Curtis Ross; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He preceded her in death on January 15, 1999. During Hazel's working years, she was employed at the International Shoe Company, a secretary at Four Sisters Manufacturing and was a beautician in her home. She enjoyed helping out at the farm and showing cattle at the fairs. She was a member of the Clay County Home Extension, a 4-H leader, and a member of the Ingraham Christian Church. She enjoyed fishing, quilting, collecting bells and picking four leaf clovers. She is survived by son, Roger (Debra) Stanley; daughter, Shirley (Ron) Payne; grandchildren, Matt (Cindy) Payne, Becky Payne, Abbey (Chad) Brenneman, Jessica (Matthew) Asselmeier, Jonathan (Emily) Stanley, Jared (Carmen) Stanley; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Ally, Cassidy, Joel, Marissa, Trey, Autumn, Aubriana, Dalli and Cyrus. She survives him, as do a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Jada Bell of Clay City, Indiana. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Dan and Suzanne Barbieri of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He also leaves behind four granddaughters, Emily and Mallory Bell and Sophia and Victoria Barbieri, as well as a step-granddaughter and step-grandson, Whitney Butts and Jesse Freeman. He was preceded in death by a brother, James. Ron began his long career in education in 1961, at Union Township High School. In 1962, he began his tenure with the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville, retiring in 1994. During this time, he was a teacher of mathematics and assistant principal at Martinsville Junior High School. In 1969, he was named principal of the same school, renamed East Middle School. In 1987, he became assistant superintendent for the school district. Being in education and school administration, Ron was a member of several professional organizations. He was a very civic-minded person. He was a member of the the local Kiwanis Club since 1975, and was awarded Legion of Honor from Kiwanis International. He served as president of the club twice and spent many years on its Board of Directors. He was named outstanding Kiwanian for 1976-77. He also served the Morgan County Mental Health Clinic, the Community Foundation of Morgan County, the YMCA, and the local Red Cross Chapter. He was on the Board of Directors for the local American Cancer Society and had been associated with the Morgan County Community Concert Association. He served on the REMC Grant Committee and the advisory board of the United Way of Central Indiana. Ron was a long and active member of the Martinsville First United Methodist Church as a Sunday School teacher and chairman of the trustees, education, finance, and pastor/parish committees. He and Jan had served as lay delegates to the United Methodist Church's Annual Conference. He was proud of his association with the Hoosier Hills Emmaus Community. Ron was a member of American Legion Post 230. He had served as an officer in the U.S. Chemical Corps. He had been a member of the U.S. Army Reserves for twelve years. In serving his community, Ron received many awards, among which were Morgan County Volunteer of the Year (1999), Central Indiana Volunteer of the Year (1999), Albert Merritt Service for Youth (2001), and most recently, the Ruth Rusie "Spirit of Service" award. After graduation he worked at Wilkins Chevrolet and Eagleson Oldsmobile and Cadillac in Olney, Illinois. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1964 with an AAS in Automotive. In the spring of 1969 he started teaching Automotive at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. He taught there through the summer of 1970 and transferred to Olney Central College when the Automotive Program was moved. In 1983, he received his BS Degree in Occupational Education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. In June of 1993, he graduated from Chicago State University with his MS Degree in Occupational Education. He retired in December of 1999 after teaching 30 years of Automotive at Olney Central College. Ray was a member of NACAT (North American Council of Automotive Teachers) and a Charter Member of ICAIA (Illinois College Automotive Instructors Association). He was a board member of the West Richland School District for 18 years. He was an area pilot and a member of the Olney Area Pilots Association, EAA Chapter 1304, Clay County Pilots Association Chapter 16, and the Tennessee Short Wing Piper Club. He had the opportunity to fly over 300 area students in the Young Eagles Program in his Piper Tri-Pacer Airplane. Ray was past Moderator of the Fairfield Congregational Christian Church Association in Fairfield, Illinois. 3548 | He enjoyed most of his life in Crawford County, but also lived in Sailor Springs, IL, and Charleston, SC. Dennis was a 1969 graduate of Clay City High School, and went on to work many small jobs before starting work at Sears, where he was a salesman for twenty years. Following Sears, there was a year of fun selling Pioneer Labels and selling AmWay with Sam Bennett. He worked as a loan officer at the Oblong Branch and as a manager of the Robinson Branch of the First National Bank in Olney for a total of seventeen years. Away from work, Dennis could often be found outdoors. Recently, he enjoyed spending time on his tractor "Run-run" and his ATV "Henry" and in his shed. Fishing was his passion, and he spent many a day in his Ranger boat on Newton Lake. He also enjoyed hunting through the years, especially quail hunting. He was a charter member of the Crawford County Bass Anglers and was also a member of the First Christian Church of Oblong since the early 80s. He has attended Highland Church of Christ in Robinson for the last few years. One of his greatest accomplishments was being a wonderful Papaw to his four grandchildren. 3549 | He enlisted in Company "G" 42nd Regiment of Volunteers on 28 September 1861 at Washington, Indiana, and on 10 October 1861 he was mustered in at Evansville, Indiana, whith his brothers William Nelson, Thomas and Henry McCracken. John James McCracken was 28 years old and entered the service as a Sergeant. The 42nd Indiana lost eight killed, fifty-three wounded and thirty-one captured at the Battle of Chickamauga. They fought under General Thomas who became known as "The Rock of Chickamauga" because it was his corps that held the line against the Confederates agter the rest of the Union army retreated in confusion. John James McCracken was one of the 9,756 Union soldiers who were wounded in the battle. His wound required the amputation of the right index finger. After the hand had healed, he was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps because he could no longer shoot a rifle. At Cliffburn Barrancks, D.C., on 28 May 1864, John was discharged being unfit for duty and having just five months of his enlistment to serve. | McCracken, John James (I46521)
