3553 He farmed and lived his entire life near West Salem. On April 12, 1916, he was married to Theo E. Schoenert at Albion. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary last year. To this couple were born two children, a son and a daughter.

Baptized in infancy, he confirmed his faith in Christ on March 31, 1912, and became a member of the local Moravian Church. He remained a good and faithful member of that congregation throughout his life. He was also a member of the Big Brothers Sunday School Class.

Failing health and strength had been his lot during the past year or more. He suffered a heart attack and departed this life at Wabash General Hospital, Mt. Carmel, at noon on Saturday, April 2, 1977 at the age of 81 years, 4 months, and 1 day. He had been hospitalized earlier that day.

He was a member of the Glenwood Church and a teacher of the teenage Sunday School class.

3562 He grew to manhood on the old homestead on which he was born. He was baptized in his infancy in the German Lutheran church. He was perfectly satisfied with his baptism and left all such matters as that for his parents to decided as he was a greaat lover of his parents; and he being a favorite with them. He was loyal to his ideals and was a lover of good sermons and was always willing to do his part in keeping up the church. There were few that excelled him in hospitality as he was a man that liked company and if you had been acquainted with him you would have had to admit the fact. No one ever came to his house at meal time and went away hungry, as all were perfectly welcome to a place at his table. It was his passion for motorsports racing that formed some of his fondest memories and he would tell stories of dirt tracking racing in Haubstadt, IN with his father-in-law, CJ Herdes. It was at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1995 where he met his racing idol, Dale Earnhardt.

He graduated from West Richland High School and later from Olney Central College where he began a career in automotive manufacturing. He retired from Hella Electronics in 2008.

There was a blood clot in his heart the doctors gave him a blood thinner to break it up, but it just broke loose, traveled to his brain and he went into a seizure. He graduated from Olney Township High School in 1926 and at an early age worked at the Olney Daily Mail as carrier, printer and later a reporter. He attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, majoring in history and political science. He taught in Richland County schools at one time and later taught local history several terms at Olney Central College. He was knowledgeable on the subject of local area history and was known as Richland County's "unofficial historian".

In 1933 he was elected to the Richland County Board of Supervisors and later was a social worker with the Illinois Emergency Relief Commission. On June 15, 1938 he was appointed supt. of public aid and retired in 1967 after 32 years of service. Upon his retirement, he became a reporter-feature writer for the Olney Daily Mail, retiring in March of 1975.

In 1973, Mr. Michels was elected to the Olney Township Board of Auditors and served 4 1/2 years. An active member of the First United Methodist Church of Olney, he taught the mens class for several years and was formerly on the administrative board. He has also been a lay church speaker in Richland and Jasper counties.

Mr. Michels was a charter member of Calhoun Ruritan Club, West Salem Masonic Lodge No. 886 and Richland Lodge No. 180, IOOF, Olney.

He loved college basketball, especially the Fighting Illini, country music, reading, and traveling to Owensboro and Paducah, Ky, to watch country-western shows.

As a young man, he played fast-pitch softball in Olney and later came to love the game of girls fast-pitch when his niece played at East Richland High School and Olney Central College. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews who starred in various sports around the region. He especially was proud of his great-granddaughter who is one of America's best wake-boarders and talked about her often.
