72 "A PIONEER DEAD; Warren Higgins of Keswick died after useful life. He had been a resident of this county for over half a century and was vice-president of Savings Bank

For the third time in four weeks, the people of Keswick are called to mourn the loss of another among their oldest, best known and most respected citizens. After a lingering illness, lasting several months, Mr. Warren Higgins succumbed to the inevitable and on Friday morning March 4th, at seven a.m., his soul passed to the 'great beyond".

Funeral services were held Sunday in the Methodist Protestant Church, conducted by Rev. C.J. Nutt. A crowded house of sympathizing friends attested the very high regard in which he was held in this community. A funeral procession three-fourths of a mile in length accompanied the remains to the Sorden Cemetery, where they laid it away in sweet repose to sleep the sleep that knows no waking, until the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and they that are in the grave shall come forth.

Warren Higgins was born in Knox Co. Ohio, Feb. 17th 1825 and died in his home in Keswick, Iowa, March 4 '04 aged 79 years and 17 days. He was the second son and the fourth child of a family of seven children, consisting of three sons and four daughters, all of whom lived to the age of womanhood and manhood, but are all dead now excepting one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Otis of Olympia, Washington.

"Mr. Higgins spent the early boyhood days in the County of his nativity, but at the age of nine years he removed with his parents to Marion Co., Ohio, where he grew to manhood, obtaining such and education as was practical for farmers' boys in that early day. He attended school in the little log school house, having slabs for seats and writing desks made of boards laid on pine driven into the walls.

"On maintaining his majority his father gave him a hundred dollars and a horse, and with this as his entire stock in trade, save his indomitable will and his hereditary principles of honesty, industry, and integrity, he started out in the world to make his fortune. For the first three years thereafter he hired himself out as a farm hand, laying by enough in that time to see his way clear to buy him a home of his own. One year later, April 14th, 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Marcia Ann Rubins of Marion Co., Ohio, and to this union were born four children, Hale, Joseph, Effie, and Delano, all of whom are living and were present at the funeral.

"After his marriage, the deceased continued to reside in Marion Co., Ohio until the fall of 1852, when he disposed of his property there, and in company with his brother-in-law, Henry C. Otis, followed the Star of Empie westward; and landed on what was then the wild and far westward prairies of Iowa, crossing the Mississippi[pi at Burlington. After a laborious journey they finally landed in Adams Township, Keokuk Co., where they together had purchased a farm of 720 acres. Later Mr. Higgins bought out the interest of his brother-in-law and continued to make this farm his residing place until 1894, when he bid farewell to the then too arduous duties of farm life, and removed to Keswick, where he has since resided.

"During all his busy life, Mr. Higgins never once thought of giving up the happy life on a farm to engage in any mercantile business, but reduced the life on a farm to a system that meant success to him. Upon the organization of a Keswick Savings Bank in 1892, Mr. Higgins became one of the charter members, was elected to be president and served in that capacity for a term of five years, since which time he has held the position of vice-president.

"Since the organization of the republican party he has been one of its stern adherents. He cast his first presidential ballot in the election of 1848. He held various offices of trust within the gift of his fellow men, was school treasurer when there was but one district in this township and served in various capacities in nearly all the offices of the township. The services of such a man in these offices, when the discharge of the duties of the offices meant so much to the=welfare of the Common wealth, served to lift our young state from the wilderness of those days to its present honored place among the sister states.

"The deceased was an honest, upright, industrious and much respected citizen, and example of honesty and integrity that no young man need to be ashamed to emulate. He was kind and considerate to those less fortunately situated in life, and obliging neighbor, a wise counselor, and one who never violated any trust imposed upon him by his fellow men. He was temperate in his Habits, affable and genial in all his ways. He leaves a wife, four children, nineteen grandchildren, one sister and many friends to mourn his departure.

Those acting as pallbearers were D. Porter Brown, Hon. F.E. White, W.W. Wilson, Chas. Irons, Daniel Fasold, and John Axmear, Jr., men who have enjoyed the privilege of his acquaintanceship for years.

79 "EDMUND C. PARK, M. D. After nearly forty years spent in ministering to the needs of suffering mankind, Dr. Edmund C. Park, of Flora, Illinois, has practically retired from the practice of his profession and is now living a semi-retired life on his handsome farm in Clay county.

During the Doctor's long and useful career he has been physician, soldier, merchant and agriculturist, and at all times a public-spirited citizen, and no one has the confidence and esteem of his fellow men in a greater degree.

Dr. Park was born in South Carolina, October 18, 1836, and is a son of Edmund C. and Susan M. (Wilkins) Park, both born in that state. Thomas Park, the grandfather of the Doctor, was a prominent educator and occupied a chair in Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina, where he died, and where he was the owner of a large plantation and a number of slaves. His son, the father of our subject, was educated to be a physician, and in 1840, with his wife and children, came to Illinois, settling at Greenville, Bond county, where he practiced medicine until 1849.

Dr. Park then started for California, having contracted the gold fever, and with eight other adventurous souls started to cross the country overland. When the little party was near Independence, Missouri, however, the cholera plague struck their camp and three of the party, including Dr. Park's father, passed away, the lad then being only thirteen years of age. He was left alone with his mother, who was the daughter of Samuel Wilkins, a native of South Carolina and a Missionary Baptist missionary and preacher for many years.

He moved to Illinois in 1844 and entered land, but only remained a short time, returning to his native state, where his death occurred. The early education of Edmund C. Park was secured in the schools of Greenville, Illinois, where he had as a schoolmate the late Robert Ingersoll.

After the death of his father he went to California, but did not remain long in that state, returning by way of the Isthmus. While on the return journey, and in Havana, Cuba, he witnessed the public execution of Narciso Lopez, the Spanish-American filibuster, who after a career marked by murder and revolutionary activities was put to death September 2, 1851. On his return to Illinois, Dr. Park took up the study of medicine under the tuition of his uncle, Dr. C. K. Hender, of Olney, and he subsequently entered the Chicago Medical College, being graduated therefrom. He began practice in LaClede, Illinois, where the outbreak of the Civil war found him, and in 1862 he gave up his practice to answer the call for volunteers. Becoming first lieutenant of Company H, Sixty-second Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, he was soon promoted to the rank of captain and detailed to hospital duty. He served with distinction with the same organization until the close of the war, having an honorable record for faithful, cheerful and capable service, and then returned to LaClede to pick up the broken threads and resume his practice where he had left off.

In 1872 Dr. Park moved to Flora, and there began a practice that lasted for something like forty years, during which time he gained the affection and confidence of his fellow men in an exceptional degree. Known as an experienced physician and surgeon, and as a man who had served his country, his practice was large from the start, but each year found him widening his circle of patients, acquaintances and friends, and when he decided that he had completed his duty and that he had earned a rest from his labors the community expressed their regret in no uncertain terms.

During five years the Doctor was the proprietor of a pharmacy, but of this he also disposed, and he is now living practically retired, the greater part of his attention being given to apple raising. He has been deservedly successful in a material way, and in addition to his large farm is the owner of considerable city property in Flora.

Always conscientious in regard to public duty, Dr. Park has been called upon to fill various offices, and he is now acting very capably as county coroner. He has been stanch in his support of Republican principles, and the leaders of the party in Southern Illinois consider him one of their valuable workers. For many years a Mason, he belongs to LaClede Lodge and Chapter, being past master of the former and having represented it in Chicago more than forty years ago.

He and his family attend the Presbyterian church, and all are well known in religious and charitable circles. In 1857 Dr. Park was united in marriage with Miss Emma Dowler, daughter of Frank Dowler, an early settler of Indiana, who later moved to Fayette county, Illinois, being a merchant at the time of his death in Vandalia. Mrs. Park died in 1896, having been the mother of four children, as follows: Emma Lula, who is living with her father and acting as his housekeeper during his declining years; Kate, who married William J. Selby and resides in Flora; Marion, deceased, who married Samuel Norwood, of South Carolina, and was living in that state at the time of her death; and Dr. Edmund C., Jr., who now has an excellent practice in Chicago, and who was for fifteen years one of Flora's best known professional men."

88 "Shoots His Wife Thinks Her a Burglar"

"A tragedy, that brought forth the deepest sympathy of the entire community, was enacted at the Harry Ayers home, south east of Foster, Monday evening at about 10 o'clock, when Mr. Ayers mistook his wife, aged 71, for a burglar and probably fatally wounded her with a .38 calibre revolver.

It seems that some one has been prowling around the Ayers home lately and removed several articles of value. Tiring of this, Mr. Ayers decided to use harsh means to stop it, so loaded up his gun in readiness for the next visit of the prowlers. Mr. Ayers had it understood with his wife that she should not get up in the night without telling him, but on Monday evening she did so not thinking.

Mr. Ayers, after a hard days work, had retired comparatively early in the evening and about 10 o'clock he heard a noise in the kitchen. Awakening from a sound sleep, he did not notice that his wife was not in bed beside him. He called out, but his wife being somewhat deaf, evidently did not hear him and came walking right up to the bed. When she was within a few feet of him, he fired, she falling into his arms. Realizing what he had done, he placed the prostrate body in a chair and ran screaming to his nearest neighbor, J. D. Nichols for help. When he had informed Mr. Nichols of the accident he ran frantically back home.

Dr. Langmack was summoned and found that the bullet had entered the body just above the heart, passed through a portion of the lung and lodged in the back. Keeping vigil all night long, Dr. Landmack had the wounded woman removed to the Lebanon Hospital Tuesday morning where she is in a very critical condition."
