5855 Modena worked in her younger years with companies supporting the Navy. Later, she was a homemaker and worked many years as a CNA. Modena was a spirited woman who had a deep love for family and all that she called family. Keeping track of her family heritage was a passion and a joy for her. Her love truly shined for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Never missing a birthday, even in the end. Modena was known for her charitable spirit as she would give the shirt off her back if she knew it would help someone in need. Modena enjoyed many things in her long, full life. She was a member of the Eagles, Moose, Elks, VFW, and the American Legion. 5869 MOTES from his daughter Lorena: Eldon Gill. He was born in 1923 and passed away in 1977. He was only 18 when he went into the service and had never been away from home before. Back several years ago some of the men and women he served with had a couple of reunions in Evansville and my brother and I attended. Dad was a medical tech - one of the men who went to the reunion was a well-renowned doctor out East. Sadly, most of them that attended have passed away now. One of Dad's friends from the Army gave me his gold cross necklace that he had worn while he was in the service which is very special. I am grateful to all the Veterans and for all the history you provide and for your service. Gill, Eldon Gerald (I26718)

5874 Moved to North Carolina 1767 with his nephew, Joseph Holder. Listed among men resident in Bethania 1775-1783.

Will recorded Stokes County, North Carolina will book 1, page 14: abstract of his will, written 23 Nov 1788 and probated in December 1790. To his wife, Mary Margaretha, he gives furniture, stock, etc. To his son Andrew he gives the "Plantation I now live on". To son John he gives 100 acres on the waters of the Yadkin river adjacent to Henry Spoonhour and Adam Fiscus. He says his children Adam, Ann Mary, Catharina, Christina, Magdalena, Margaretha and Hannah have already received their shares. Signature is "Andrew x Folk" (or Fulk).

November 9, 1767, Yesterday Andreas Volz (Volk), Joseph Holder, Stauber, and their families, arrived from Pennsylvania.

July 23, 1768, For some days the weather has been very hot and oppressive, with frequent thunderstorms. As Andreas Volk and his wife were approaching Bethania there was a sharp clap of thunder, the horse reared, the girth broke, and the saddle and Volk fell one way, and his wife fell the other. Neither was hurt.

December 30, 1768 Benjamin Leinbach came to Br. Graff and announced his engagement to Andreas Volk's daughter, Christine, and asked for the publication of the Banns, and that we would marry him. For this latter he was referred to Br. Loesch as Justice of the Peace; the Banns can be published by Br. Bachhoff as Public Reader and Clerk of Dobbs Parish.

December 24, 1770, In the evening the congregation, including the children, rejoiced over the Incarnation of our God. In the first service, at six o'clock, Christmas hymns were sung, and the Christmas story was told to the children. After half an hour's intermission there was Love-feast, the story of the Birth of the Saviour was read from the Bible, and hymns were sung to Br. Volk's violin accompaniment. Then honey-cakes and verses were distributed, and the service closed with earnest prayer. The children were full of wonder and joy, it being the first time they had attended such a service.

May 20, 1772. Andreas Volk and six of his neighbors from the New Garden Settlement have been to the Allimance, where the battle with the Regulators was fought last year, and have secured 3,000 lbs. of flour, at 15 shillings per 100 lbs.

May 27, 1772, Andreas Volk was given a Certificate which frees him from attending Muster. A number have been issued this year, as the Captains are insisting on it in their districts.

September 8, 1778, Br. Bagge has again begun work on the well on his building lot, and had some rock blasted out by Andreas Volk.

January 10, 1780, Andreas Volck came for me, and I rode with him to the home of Heinrich Demuth, where I baptized Demuth's twins, George and Andreas, and little Anna Catharina Erny.

October 9, 1780, Andreas Volk's son came for the doctor for the brother-in-law Johanna Krause, who was shot in the leg yesterday while standing guard at Richmond, which was again visited by a strong party of Tories under Gideon Wright. The bullet had remained in his limb; Joseph Dixon was sent to bind up the wound. The Tories had expressed sympathy for the injured man, saying the ball had not been meant for him but for someone else, and so on. What consequences this may have remains to be seen.

April 10, 1786. Brother Beck gave in the names of the friends near Bethania who wish to be received into the Society, namely, John and Anna Maria Krause and their two daughters, Margaretha and Maria; Johann and Maria Volk; Jacob and Johanna Volz; and the unmarried Andreas Volk.

August 17, 1790, Young Andreas Volck brought word that his father passed away peacefully last evening.

He became a recognized expert in marine insurance loss mitigation after assembling, directing and personally participating in the first American insurance-based international marine salvage operation. This risky operation in the Gulf of Oman was made the more dangerous by persistent attacks upon the salvage crew and divers by tribal pirates fighting to capture the highly valuable marine and oil drilling equipment. This historic and successful effort earned Richard national and international attention, including honors from the Sultanate of Oman, the U.S. Government, Traveler’s Board of Directors, the American Institute of Marine Underwriters, and Lloyds of London. His career included executive leadership positions with Nippon Fire & Marine, Traveler’s Singapore, Prosperity Insurance in Beirut, Lebanon, Hassad Insurance of Iraq, and service as an international risk management VP/division head with the Ford Corporation and M.A. Hanna Corporation. Nearing retirement, he became a founder and executive of NxGen Electronics, San Diego. Richard served on the Insurance Advisory Committee (U.S. Department of Commerce); Cargo Security Committee (U.S. Department of Transportation); American Institute of Marine Underwriters; Great Lakes Protection Association; and Maritime Law Association of the United States (International Law Committee). He was an advisor to various U.S. Senators and Congressman regarding business operations in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, and a member of a U.S. Department of State trade delegation to Iraq. Richard was an expert in the turbulent politics of the Levant, including the rise of Jihadist terrorists groups such as ISIS.

Mr. Ausbrook was a lifelong liberal. He helped shatter glass ceilings holding back women and minorities in insurance, law and business. He was a voracious reader of literature and history, had eclectic tastes in music, loved theatre, film and art. He was fluent in French and had an affinity for Latin. He was a gifted writer, something he wished to develop in retirement. He loved animals (and they loved him). He traveled extensively, lived on both coasts and in the American heartland, but chose to make Maine his permanent, retirement home.

In addition to his wife Maureen, he is survived by 5 children, 7 grandchildren, and 3 sons-in-law: Margaret “Meg” Zins and husband Nick and children Augustus and Mavis; Emily Ausbrook and son Redd Ausbrook-Wong; Morgan Giddings and husband Casey and children Harrison and Olivia; Shelly Long and husband Rich and children Alyssa and Alex; and his son, Dylan Kennedy Ausbrook. He also leaves many cherished friends and cousins.

An Interfaith Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church, Kennebunk, led by Rev. Lara K-J Campbell, Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 11:00 am. The USCG will scatter Richard’s ashes at a later date in a private ceremony at sea.
