NEWTON - Ralph Dean Brooks, 78, of Newton died at 10:25 p.m. Friday (Jan. 13, 2012) at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Mark Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be at Brooks Cemetery in Newton with military rites by the Jasper Post 20 American Legion. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today (Jan. 18) at the funeral home. He was born July 24, 1933, in Jasper County, the son of Victor and Beulah Cox Brooks. Survivors include one son, Dennis Brooks of Newton; two daughters, Deania Trimble of Newton, and Doris Facer of Paris; one brother, Larry Brooks of Newton; two sisters, Sharon Gerber of Champaign, and Wanda Brackett of Tuscon; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Mr. Brooks was formerly employed with United Technologies Automotive in Newton. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Support Fund.

Benjamin Fuller "Fud" Franke, 88, of Newton, Illinois passed away at 7:40 a.m., Monday, April 12, 2010 at Newton Rest Haven in Newton, IL.

Funeral services at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL. Burial in the Riverside Cemetery in Newton, IL with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. Masonic Rites by the Newton Masonic Lodge #216.

Benjamin Fuller Franke better know as "Fud" was born on January 9, 1922 in Newton, IL the son of John Fuller and Maud Christina (Bruner) Franke. Fud was a businessman on the square in Newton for over 50 years being owner/operator of Franke's Recreations.

Fud served his country in the United States Army during WWII and was awarded with the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was life member of the Jasper Post #20 American Legion and served as Commander for 12 years. He was a member of the Newton VFW where had served as Past Quarter Master; Newton Eagles; 40 and 8 in Effingham; Effingham Moose; Newton Masonic Lodge; 32 degree mason and member of the Ainad Temple; Jasper County Shrine Club and the NRA.

Fud is survived by his loving companion, Margie J. Cardeso of Newton.

Fud was preceded in death by his parents.

6355 Nicholas (Nick) Ederer, age 86, a former resident of the Ste Marie community passed away this morning at the Richland Memorial
Hospital.

Mr. Ederer was a native of Jasper County and was born in Ste. Marie Township, the son of Michael Ederer and Elizabeth Hasler Ederer. His wife Ethel has preceded him in death on July 23, 1958. Mr. Ederer farmed for many years in Jasper county and had been a resident of the Burgin Nursing Home for the past several months.

He leaves five children: Mrs. Ruth Ochs and Eugene Ederer both of West Liberty, Mrs. Georgianna Schneider and Miss Anna Marie Ederer both of Dundas and Lawrence Ederer of Chicago. There are three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Henry Ederer of Waterman is a brother. A son Virgil has also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock in St. Mary's of Assumption Church in Ste. Marie with the Rev. Fr. Joseph O'Reilly officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery. Friends may call at the Summers-Marshall Funeral Home. The Holy Rosary will be recited in the Funeral Home.

6357 Nick served in the US Army for two tours, part of which was in occupied Japan. He also served on General MacArthur's Honor Guard. During his marriage to Ruth, they served as foster parents for over 100 children. He was member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Joseph Catholic Church. 6358 Nila Amerman, 89, of Clay City, IL, died April 22, 2005, at Richland Memorial hospital in Olney.

Mrs. Amerman was born July 18, 195, in Bridgeport, IL, the daughter of Sylvester Clinton and Emma Runyon Smith. She married Fred Amerman May 23, 1930 in Wheatland, IN and he preceded her in death February 13, 1974.

She was a retired nurse's assistant at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney, and was a member of Clay City Baptist church.

Survivors include four sons, Ronnia, Vance, Terry, and Jerry Amerman; three daughters, Sue Adams, Lila Deaton, and Aleta "Fi" Clontz; one sister, Waneda Childres; 28 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, a son Freddie L. Amerman; and three sisters, Verda Bach, Nellie Shivers, and Velma Burris.

Funeral services were held at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home with burial in the Clay City Cemetery.

6359 Nina Britton, age 93, of Hord, IL, passed away at 11:32 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2014, at the Evergreen Nursing and ReHab in Effingham, IL.

She was born September 9, 1920 in Champaign County, Illinois, the daughter of Herman and Effie (Basford) Murphy. She was united in marriage with Thomas H. Britton on June 26, 1940 and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1985.

Nina was employed for 33 years by Fedders Inc.in Effingham as an assembler and line clerk and was a member of Hord Congregational Christian Church.

She is survived by her sister, Lucille Painter of Mason; special daughter, Joyce (Tony) Feldhake of Mason; special granddaughter, Jenna (Evan) Smith of Xenia; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Effie Murphy; husband, Thomas Britton; seven brothers and two sisters.

Arrangements are being handled by J.W. Neal Funeral Home in Louisville, IL where the family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Funeral service will be at J. W. Neal Funeral Home at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, February 25, 2014,

She was born on April 20, 1927 in Clay City, Illinois , the daughter of the late Samuel J. and Dolly May Birget Scammahorn. Ninetta retired from the Cafeteria Dept. of the Eldred Central School in Eldred. She was a member of the North Milford Congregation of Jehovah's Witness, Milford, Pa. and she was affiliated with the Congregation of Liberty, NY.
Ninetta married Frank German, who pre-deceased her. She is survived by her 2 sons, Donald German and his wife Nancy of Eldred, NY, Fred German and his wife Mitzi of Hot Desert Springs, California, her daughter, Frieda Lehr and her husband Dana of Fayetteville, N.C., her brother Charles Scammahorn of Illinois, several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her 3 sisters, Mary, Hazel and Helen and 2 brothers, Norman and Glenn Scammahorn. Memorial services will be held Saturday July 9, at 12:30 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Shin Hollow Road, Port Jervis, NY. Fred German will officiate. Interment will be private. Nathan and Elizabeth were married 3-21-1796 in Clark, now Montgomery County, Kentucky and moved to Posey, Indiana (before it was a state) in about 1805.

They were the parents of William James Levitt.

Mr. Walker was born March 6, 1914, in Mason, son of William and Florence (Cornwell) Walker. He married Betty Phillips Nov. 2, 1968, in Effingham, and she survives.

He was a retired gauger for Ashland Oil Co. and a member of the Old Union Christian Church in Louisville and the Clay City Odd Fellows.

Other survivors include four sons, William, Strasburg; Jack, Louisville; Charles, Overdon, Texas; and Noble, at home; five daughters, Mrs. Janet Culver, Strasburg; Mrs, Mary Britton, Clay City; Mrs. Kay Taylor, Flora; Mrs. Betty Belleville, Louisville; and Mrs. Ruth Krieg, Flora; a step-son Steven Phillips, at home; two brothers, Charles, Joliet; and Riley, Flora; three sisters, Frances Sills, Iuka; Mrs. Mildred IJoston, Xenia; and Mrs. Helen Kincaid, Louisville; 22 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

6381 Nolan Franklin, 84, of Flora, IL died at 5:45 AM Sunday, September 27, 2009 at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL."

He was born September 22, 1925 in Sailor Springs, IL on the family farm to Baldy & Josephine (Noll) Franklin. He married Faye Frank on December 12, 1947 in Kentucky.

He worked from 1953-1975 at Halliburton, was co-owner of United Water Blasters until 1981, then was co-owner of Franklin Sandblasting until his retirement in 1996.

Nolan served in the U.S. Army and was in the 83rd Infantry that fought through France, Belgium, and Luxenborg then into Germany. He was one of the first American soldiers to reach the Rhine River in Germany and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and 2 sets of Oak Leaf Clusters.

He is survived by his wife: Faye Franklin; two sons: Dana Franklin and Lonnie Franklin; five grandchildren: Tonia Lamond, Mary Downen, Lonnie Franklin II, Julie Haupt, and Abigail Rotari; thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother: Malbert Franklin; a sister: Norma Abbott.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers (Bill, Oris & Roy Franklin), and three sisters (Bernice Bridges, Alberta Anderson, & Hazel Hills).

Funeral services were held at Frank & Bright Funeral Home with Pastor Brad Harris officiating.

Burial was in Dillman Cemetery, Sailor Springs, with military honors.

Visitation was at Frank & Bright Funeral Home.

Nolan was appointed to the Landes United Methodist Church in 1975, appointed to Cisne United Methodist Church full time in 1977, Palestine United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Church in 1984 retiring in 1986 then served Mound United Methodist Church for 12 years. 6395 Norene Nettleton, 89 of Lincoln, Nebraska, departed this life Wednesday, October 27, 2021, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday November 11 at Southview Baptist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. A burial service will be held June 9, 2022 at Freedom Baptist Church, Noble, Illinois.

Norene was born September 3, 1932 in Clay County, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Wiley Dennis Nettleton on June 9, 1956.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses; Anita and Alan McCracken, Warren and Linda Nettleton, Vanora and Thomas Baruth, and Eilene and Gene Stanger. She is also survived by her sister Lorene Mayden and extended family.
Wiley and Norene had 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren besides a host of relatives and friends.

She will be greatly missed in the community. She accepted Christ as her savior during her grade school years. Norene Nettleton was a member at Freedom Baptist Church (Noble ,Illinois ), St. John’s Baptist (Raleigh, N.C.), Trinity Baptist (Riverside, California), and in 1976 Southview Baptist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she was a faithful servant until her death. She was always present at service as long as her health would permit. Her life was a living testimony. Norene was a children’s teacher for over 50 years. She was a kind and loving Mom dedicated to serving Faith, Family, and Friends. Norene was always spreading sunshine in the lives of others. We cannot say she is dead, but is now with Jesus Our Savior. We cannot call her back, but we can go to meet her.

A loved one from us is gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in the house
That never can be filled.

Jeannie was born March 23, 1934 in Richland County, Illinois, the daughter of Joe Eagleson and Pauline Harmon. She married Howard E. Blesch and he preceded her in death on October 27, 2001.

Jeannie was a member of North Freedom Baptist Church and had worked at AMF.

She is survived by her daughter, Diana L. Simon and soul mate, Bill Hout, Noble, IL; Sons, Michael Lee Simon, Troy. OH and Paul William Simon, Jr. and Rita, Comer, GA; brothers, Jack Newberry and Diane and Wayne Newberry and Donna, Peoria, IL; sisters, Marjorie Usry and Bill, Comer, GA and Mary Gibson and John, Olney, IL; nine grandchildren, two granddaughters-in-law, and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Norma was born on December 2, 1922 in Sailor Springs, the daughter of Baldy and Josephine (Noll) Franklin. She married Harold Abbott on December 20, 1943. He preceded her in death on March 12, 2013.

Norma was a full fledged homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a lifetime member of the Sailor Springs Women's American Legion Auxiliary. Norma worked at the Sailor Springs grade school as a cook and at the garment factory in Clay City. Norma especially enjoyed her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Steve (Carolyn) Abbott of Paris, IL; Son, James (Carol) Abbott of Mitchell, IN; Grandchildren, Ashley (Richard) Banks of Rogers, AR; Westley (Colleen) Abbott of Rogers, AR; Tony Burton, Olney, IL; and Christina Biggers of Morganfield, KY; and Great Grandchildren, Tate Abbott, Reese Abbott, Ripley Abbott, and Henry Banks.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, William Franklin, Malbert Eugene Franklin, Orris C. Franklin, Roy C. Franklin, and James Nolan Franklin, and sisters, Bernice L. Bridges, Alberta E. Anderson, and Hazel C. Hills.

Mrs. Clodfelter was born February 9, 1930, in Edwards County, the daughter of C.W. and Gladys (Rosignol) Ahlfeld. She married Sidney E. Clodfelter on August 15, 1947, at Moravian Church in West Salem. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of Moravian Women and was active in "Journey Through Faith." She enjoyed her family and especially loved teaching the children's Sunday School class and even dressed as an clown to capture the kids' attention. She also loved camping.

Mrs. Clodfelter is survived by her two sons, Ivan (Kathleen) Clodfelter and Ernie (Crystal) Clodfelter; three daughters, Kathryn (Dennis) Thacker, Nancy Hutchings, and Carol (William) Van Matre; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Rusk and Evelyn (Larry) Tennyson; two brothers, Donald (Ermajean) Ahlfeld and Clyde (Jean Ann) Ahlfeld.

She was preceded in death by her parents, C.W. and Gladys Ahlfeld; husband, Sidney E. Clodfelter; brother, Ivan Ahlfeld; sister, Eloise Clodfelter; son-in-law, Jerry Hutchings; and great-granddaughter, Olivia Kathleen Clodfelter.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Hauser Room of Moravian Church in West Salem.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sanctuary of the church.

Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery.

Ingram Funeral Home of West Salem is in charge of arrangements.

6399 Norma C. Hildebrand, 67, Rural Route Clay City, died February 21, 1990 at Richland Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 12, 1922 in Sailor Springs, the daughter of Mike and Celestia Rinehart McKinney. She married Carl Hildebrand February 13, 1939 in Sailor Springs. He died in 1986.

She was a homemaker and Pixley Township clerk. She was a member of the Sailor Springs Christian church.

Surviving are a son, Carl Hildebrand; two daughters, Linda Davis and Cindy Wyatt; a brother, Jim McKinney; two sisters, Ellarea McKinney and Katheryn Linderman; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was prededed in death by her husband, parents, one grandson, one sister, and two brothers.

Services were held at Hosselton Bookhout and Engelmeier Funeral Home in Clay City with burial in Smith Cemetery north of Clay City.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.

6400 Norma Jean Ames of Louisville died at Flora Gardens.

She was born in Dieterich, IL the daughter of Andrew Irl & Emelia Gerth Lewis. She married Bervillo Paul "Bud" Ames in April, 1958. He preceded her in death March 24, 1994.

She was a laundress for J. C. Petty Co. in Effingham and a member of the VFW in Effingham.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy; four sons Irl, Stephen, Lawrence, & Gilbert; sisters, Lucille Barlow, Marilyn Koester, and Marie Meyer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Richard, sister, Shirley Davis & brothers Albert & Donnie Lewis.

Burial was in German Methodist Cemetery, Bible Grove with Neal Funeral Home in charge.
