751 | Bennie Vern Decker, 74 of Olney, died at his home at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 10,1992. Mr. Decker was born August 5, 1917 in Wayne County, the son of Asa Lee & Hallie E. (Fleenor) Decker. He married Avis Clements November 9, 1936. Mr. Decker was a retired tool pusher in the oil field. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of American Legion. Mr. Decker is survived by his wife, Avis Decker of Olney; one son, Clyde L. Decker of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. James (Larna) Anderson of Dundas, Mrs. James (Verna Kay) Aldridge of Olney and Mrs. Patrick (Janice) Maloney of Stewartown, Pa; one sister Mrs. Donald (Mildred) Wass of Starkweather, N.D.; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. 753 | Berlin Pierce was born to Chauncey Pierce, presumably in Gibson County, Indiana, but possible in Worchester area of Massachusetts. He apprenticed as a blacksmith in Princeton during the 1850s. He then went to Visalia, California where he operated a blacksmith shop named "Birley and Pierce". (It is mentioned in a History of Tulare County). After the death of his brother John, Berlin came to Clay County and married his sister-in-law Julia. He helped her raise her children with John. 755 | Bernadine E. Dasch, 91, of Noble passed away on May 15, 2021 in Olney. Bernadine E. Dasch was born April 24, 1930 in Richland Co., IL to Roscoe and Edna (Fritschle) Scherer. She married Austin Dasch on April 20, 1956. He preceded her in death on February 12, 2019. Bernadine was known for her cooking and was famous for her coconut pies. She brought numerous meals to the fields when the family was out farming. Bernadine was also known to spoil her grandchildren with cookies. No one ever left her house hungry. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Noble. Bernadine E. 756 | Bernard "Bo" S. Esser, 89, Washington, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012. Bernard was born to the late Bernard H. Esser and wife Amelia May 9, 1923, at their home in Washington. He grew up in Washington, graduating from St. Francis Borgia in 1941. After high school, Bernard attended the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He continued his education with Purdue, and then Columbia University in New York, where he graduated as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. During World War II Bernard served in the Pacific Theater, after coming back home he met his future wife, Sadie Crackel, who was an Army nurse. They married June 26, 1947, at St. Francis Borgia Church, Washington. Bernard worked as a pharmacist at Schroeder Drugs from 1947 until 1990. He also was active with the East Central College Foundation for 20 years, and was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Elks. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Glen A. Esser; one granddaughter, Stacey Copeland; one brother, Tony Esser; and two sisters, Laurabelle Penney and Mary Beth Klemm. Bernard is survived by his wife, Sadie M. Esser; three daughters, Janice Esser, Springfield, Judy Copeland and husband Terry, Union, and Jane Montgomery and husband Marty, St. Louis; five grandchildren, Rebecca Copeland, Laura Bockhorst, and Andrew, Marcus and Tara Montgomery; five great- grandchildren, Tyler, Kirsten, Connor, Carter and Aiden; other relatives and many friends. During that period of time he farmed, did construction work and oil field work, and adjusted crops for Country Mutual Insurance. For the next 35 years, he worked for Country Mutual Insurance. He was active in the IEA and NEA, the Ruritan Club, the Gideons, and the Masons. He was devoted to the church and attended the Congregational Christian Church where he was a teacher, a superintendent, and a deacon. 759 | Berneta Emma (Lutz) Weiler, age 90, of Clay City, Illinois, passed away Friday morning, December 7, 2018, at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. She was born March 25, 1928, in rural Clay County, the daughter of Elza and Grace (Brown) Lutz. She was united in marriage to William "Bill" E. Weiler on December 7, 1946, and they shared 64 years of marriage prior to his death September 28, 2011. Berneta was employed in the Clay City Grade School cafeteria for over 20 years. She was a member of Clay City United Methodist Church. A devoted wife, mother, and adoring grandmother, she lovingly put her family first and will always be remembered for her delicious home cooked meals and the enjoyment and pride she took in caring for her garden and flower beds. Berneta is survived by three sons: Alan (Doris) Weiler of Maiden, NC, Chris Weiler of Clay City, and Mark (Joyce) Weiler of Clay City; daughter-in-law: Ruth Ann Weiler of Clay City; grandchildren: Shari Weiler (Kevin) Ezell, Chad (Jessie) Weiler, Angela (Dusty) Noden, Amanda (Dave) Wilson, Layton Weiler, Jesteen (Jonathon) Billingsley, Joe (Rachel) Bruner, and Sarah Weiler; great-grandchildren: Kathryn, Alexandra, Kira, Chase, Elliott, Noelle, Norah, Zaiden, Azaira, Reagan, Ava, Rylan, Kamden, Knox, and Lilian; two sisters: Dorothea (the late Charles) Pringle of Clay City, and Lorene (Frank) Mayden of Godfrey; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She and her husband Wayne enjoyed camping and traveling. They would often attend local stock car races together. She was a member of the Rebecca's Lodge for many years, the Clay City Garden Club, and the Goodtime Red Hat Breakfast Group. She was a cook for the Clay City Unit Ten schools. She married George L. Weidner on December 30, 1944, in Flora. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2002. She was a retired second-grade teacher in North Clay, where she taught for 35 years. She was a member of Louisville Baptist Church. She was also a member of Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Clay City Eastern Star, Sailor Springs American Legion Auxiliary and Clay City American Legion Auxiliary. She was a lifetime member of Sailor Springs Historical Society. She enjoyed farm life, gardening, cooking, housekeeping, bird watching, animals, children and her family. She was born December 9, 1916, in Crowell, Tx., the daughter of Robert Rufus "R.R." and Hattie Moss (Wade) Rochell. She was married to Alfred E. Carter and he preceded her in death in the year 2000. She was a member of the Crossville Missionary Baptist Church, a farm wife and homemaker. Her family was of utmost importance to her. Survivors include sons Herman (Pat) Carter of Newaygo, Mich., and Charles "Alfred C." She married Edwin Pearce on October 22, 1950 in Vineland, NJ, he survives. Berniece was a homemaker, as well as, owner and operator of the Country Kitchen in Flora, for several years. She was an avid bowler, she was one of the founding members of the Flora Womens Bowling League and a member of 3 leagues. Berniece also held several offices including past President of the VFW Ladies Auxillary, and was a member of Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband Edwin Pearce; children: Walterene Pearce; Judy (Larry) Griffith; Chuck (Martha) Pearce; Phil (Janet) Pearce; Shirley (Mike) Bily; daughter-in-law: Becky Pearce; one brother: Julius Smith; one sister: Ressie Morris; 23 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Tootie was born December 11, 1944 in Herrin to Elmer and Edna (Williams) Harvel. Tootie was retired having been employed by Cabot Industries in Tuscola for many years. She attended the Ferges Free Methodist Church before her health began to fail. She was a 1962 graduate of Herrin High School. She enjoyed playing cards and watching her soaps on the television. Tootie is survived by two daughters, Michelle Statler of Carterville and Tonya (David) Frick of Johnston City; one son, Sean Cross of Fox Lake; four grandchildren, Talyn and Dalton Frick of Johnston City, Chelsea David of Carterville and Dustin David of Fox Lake; two sisters, Helen Jenkins of Marion and Sue (Jerry) Ranchino of Johnston City. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Berti was born on June 9, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Harry and Frieda (Siepermann) Wiedenroth. She married Herbert F. Burt, who survives, on August 20, 1948 in Chippewa Lake, OH. Also surviving are her children: Pat Burt, Debbie Leininger, and David Burt; five grandchildren: Mike Leininger, Jon Leininger, Julie Leininger Johnson, Jennifer Burt Ellis, Lindsey Burt Podjasek; three great-grandchildren: Jonah and Jillian Ellis, Tyler Podjasek; and a brother, Stanley Kohler. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harry Kohler. Berti served in the Women's Army Corp (W.A.C.) during World War II, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and a member of the First Baptist Church of Clay City. She was a dedicated and loving wife and mother, Sunday School and Bible School Teacher, as well as Kids' Church "Grandma", Brownie Troop Leader, 4-H Club Leader, school volunteer, active member of the Clay County Republican Women's Club, Eagle Forum, 700 Club and other Christian and conservative organizations. She was definitely a Proverbs 31 Woman. . ."Her children rose up and called her blessed." Bertha was born September 19, 1930 in Rochester, New York to Carlin and Alice (Chadwick) Smith. She married Irving LeFever and he preceded her in death. She later married Sam Thompson on April 9, 1955 in San Diego, California. He preceded her in death on June 23, 2001. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Salem. Bertha loved unconditionally, devoting herself to home life and caring for her family. She shared laughter with everyone making others feel good. Bertha is survived by her daughter: Helen (Ken) Markham; two sons: Ted (Deb) Thompson and Rob (Vicki) Thompson; sister: Margaret Butts; daughter-in-law: Carol LeFever; two sisters-in-law: Imogene Cox and Marjorie Thompson; special friend: Linda Daugherty; along with 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He retired after 30 years as a postal clerk in Olney and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Olney. He was also a member of Richland American Legion Post No. 30, Olney Elks Lodge No. 926 BPOE. He was a 4 1/2 year Army veteran, having served at Guadalcanal. Surviving in addition to his wife, Myra, are one son Robert Pittman, Fairfield, Ohio; one sister, Freida Mae Miller, Arcadia, FL; a sister-in-law Carrie Pittman, St. Petersburg, FL; two brothers-in-law, Vernon Hanes, Flora and Kenneth Hanes, Olney; two grandsons, several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Willis was a homemaker and she loved to make a garden and take care of her plants. She liked to read especially the Laura Ingels Wilder book, and she also loved to shop, and she especially loved to take care of people and loved children, and her pets. She married John A. Dulaney on August 16, 1958, in Olney, and together they shared 59 years of marriage. During her life, Betty worked at several area restaurants including Holland Truck Stop, Billys Café, and others in Olney. She was a loving wife and mother. Betty often babysat her grandchildren, her great-granddaughters being her pride and joy. She and John loved going and listening to bluegrass music, and also attending auctions. Betty is survived by her husband: John Dulaney of Clay City; 2 daughters: Carla Evans (Donnie) and Charlotte Dulaney all of Clay City; a special nephew: Robert Bobby Miller (Lon) of Sarasota, FL; 3 grandchildren: Shane Dulaney of Clay City, Bridgett Shafer (Josh) of Olney, and Joshua Taylor of Noble; 3 great-granddaughters: Baylee Shafer, Jaelynn Taylor, and Maysen Shafer; 1 sister: Florence Mae Schreiter of Mill Valley, CA; along with several other nieces and nephews.
