8554 | Services will be conducted in the Memorial Chapel of Summers Funeral Home for Darrell E. McDowell, 57, 318 S. Morgan, who died Friday morning at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes. The Rev. Mike Wilder will officiate. Burial will be at Hanna, northwest of Noble. Born May 5, 1925, near Noble, he was the son of Delbert and Estella Daley McDowell, both of whom preceded him in death. He was married July 3, 1957, at Baltimore, Md., to Helen McLean, who survives. Mr. McDowell was formerly a heavy construction worker and had last been employed at the ClPS power station at Newton. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion post here as well as the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Olney Lodge No. 140 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Besides the widow, survivors include two sons, John and Allen McDowell, both of Olney; a daughter, Mrs. Patti Bogetto, Olney; a brother, Robert McDowell, Olney; and a sister, Virginia Kissen, Bridgeport; one grandchild, Leslie Bogetto, Bridgeport; and several nieces and nephews. 8563 | Sharen had a firm and steadfast foundation in Christ and passed this on to her family and friends through her unbounded, unconditional love. She spent her life serving others. She taught toll painting and was an accomplished quilter. Her light and beauty will forever shine in our hearts. She was 58 years old. Sharen loved her family and friends and was always a pleasure to be around, she loved having people around and always sent people away encouraged and better for the time they spent with her. She loved music, and various crafts, she was an amazing artist and painter. Sharen and Pat moved from Illinois to Oregon and began a bit of a pilgrimage of several family members ending up on the West Coast. She was taken far to early by cancer but reunited with her beloved sister Rhonda and her Father Jack with whom she shared a very special bond. 8564 | Sharon Ann Lane was born in Zanesville, Ohio, but grew up in North Industry, Stark County, Ohio. She graduated from Canton South High School in June 1961 and entered the Aultman Hospital School of Nursing the following September. After graduating from Aultman in 1965, she worked at the hospital until May, 1967, when she decided to try her hand in the business world. After three quarters at the Canton Business College she quit to join the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Reserve on April 18, 1968. 2LT Lane began training on May 5 at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. On 17 June she reported to Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. While at Fitzsimons, she was promoted to First Lieutenant. On 24 April 1969 she reported to Travis Air Force Base in California with orders for Vietnam. She arrived at the 312th Evac Hospital at Chu Lai on 29 April and was assigned to the Intensive Care ward for a few days before being assigned to the Vietnamese Ward. She worked 5 days a week (12 hours per day) in this ward and on the sixth day worked in Intensive Care. At 0605, 8 June 1969, the 74th Medical Battalion reported a rocket hit between Wards 4a and 4b of the 312th Evacuation Hospital. The explosion killed two and wounded 27 US and Vietnamese personnel (see the 67th Medical Group log). 1LT Lane was killed by fragmentation wounds. Although seven other American military nurses died while serving in Vietnam, 1LT Lane was the only American servicewoman killed as a direct result of enemy fire throughout the war. A Memorial Service was held at Chu Lai on June 10, 1969, and a Catholic Mass was held June 11, 1969. Services in Canton were held June 14, 1969. 1LT Sharon Ann Lane was buried in Sunset Hills Burial Park, Canton, Ohio. Source: VirtualWall.org ~ Lt. She was posthumously awarded the the Bronze Star with V device and the Purple Heart. In 1970, the recovery room at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, where Lt. Lane had been assigned before going to Viet Nam, was dedicated in her honor. In 1973, Aultman Hospital in Canton, OH, where Lane had attended nursing school, erected a bronze statue of Lane. 8565 | Sharon Christine Harper, 65, of Noble, died at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. Arrangements are incomplete at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney. Burial will be in Crest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery in rural Claremont. Mrs. Harper was born January 24, 1945, in Scott County, Mo., the daughter of Lysander and Alberta (Gross) Taylor. She married Terry Harper on June 4, 1966. He survives. She retired from Champion Laboratories in Albion in January 2006. Mrs. Harper is survived by her husband, Terry Harper of Noble; son, Steve Harper and his wife, Tracy, of Vincennes, Ind.; daughter, Lori Ampole and her husband, George, of Noble; sister, Freda Payne and her husband, Joe of Joliet; sister, Katy Gum and her husband, Rod, of Rock Away Beach, Ore.; sister, Geraldine Shroyer, of Clay City; sister, Ann Lincoln, of Marble Hill, Mo.; sister, Sandy Kurtz, of Olney; grandchildren, Zachary Harper, Nathaniel Harper, Kaleb Harper, Jacob Jenner, Auston Stuart and Samantha Stuart; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. 8566 | Sharon was born October 11, 1947, in Clay City, Illinois, 2nd born daughter to parents Monroe and Emma Jean Lawson, who proceeded her in death along with baby brother Lawson. On November 27, 1971, Sharon married Clark Smith in St Louis, Missouri and remained happily wed for over 50 years. Sharon is survived by Clark, their 2 children, son David (Margaret), daughter, Jennifer (Tim), 2 grandchildren Emma and Edwin of son David, sister Judy Partain (Stan) of Lexington, VA, and brother Gary Lawson (Claudia) of Peoria, Illinois. Also surviving are 4 nephews and 2 nieces. After graduating from Clay City Community High School in 1965, Sharon pursued her Nursing degree from Missouri Baptist College of Nursing, graduating in 1969. She worked as a nurse in hospitals across St Louis, MO, Chicago, IL and Richmond, VA. She and Clark relocated to Chapel Hill in 1998 and lived in the Governors Club. She continued her nursing career as Director of Nursing at Carolina Meadows from 2001 until 2014. In 2015, she began work at Right at Home as Director of Nursing and remained there until her retirement in 2021. Sharon was a fun-loving, loyal, affectionate, and affirming woman. She loved her husband, children, and grandchildren, and enjoyed serving people in her community. Her laughter and personality were contagious. Sharon was a beautiful, selfless woman who always put others needs before her own. She treated all of her patients with the utmost care and compassion as if they were her own family. Sharon was an avid University of North Carolina Tar Heels fan and could often be spotted in the stands routing on her favorite teams, especially her beloved men and womens tennis teams. She had numerous friends in the athletic department and Rams Club. She will be greatly missed. A small service will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery where her ashes will be scattered by immediate family. At age 24, on December 6, 1946, Edna eloped to marry Byron Sefton; on the eve of her marriage, her giggling siblings informed her father, Dave, of the reason for Ednas absence. Edna and Byron raised three children during their twenty-year marriage. When Byron died in 1966, Edna continued to run the family farm alongside her son, Phil. During her long life, Edna found pleasure in many pastimesscratch cooking, eating, reading, puzzling, gardening, watching sports, debating politics, traveling, talking, and babysitting her grandkids. She was first baptized and taught Sunday school at Red Brush Christian Church, later became a long-term member of Bethel Christian Church, andin more recent yearsenjoyed church services at her assisted living facility. 8590 | She died as a result of a tragic accident June 6, 1938 in Sailor Springs. Mr. Kesterson had been cultivating in the field when he was summoned by Mrs. Kesterson who needed him at home. When he arrived he tied the team of horses to the garden fence and for some unknown reason the team suddenly broke away from the fence and circled the barn lot. Mrs. Kesterson was standing in front of a parked auto for protection from the runaways when the team, dragging the cultivator, swung it around striking the rear of the car and pulling it up over her.
