- On 10 May 1969, Shirley's 20-year-old brother, Marine Cpl. Ronald Dale Keller, was killed in action in Vietnam. He had served a tour of duty from July 1967 until August of 1968 and was awarded two purple hearts for wounds suffered. He was killed by enemy mortar fire at Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province 3 weeks after returning to duty in Vietnam.
LCpl. U.S. Marine Corps, {MC2215238}, Vietnam War-LCpl. Keller was killed in action from rocket & artillery fire during Operation Virginia Ridge on 5-10-1969 after only three weeks of field service with the 1st Battalion of the 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division. LCpl. Keller started his tour of Vietnam on April 23, 1969.
He is the son of Mr. Edwin G. Keller & Mrs. Frances Simmons of Shirley Avenue in Worden, Madison County, Illinois, and he enlisted with the Marines in St. Louis in January of 1966.
Awards: Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with One Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.
