- Doris Mae Poppe, age 69, of Helena died from complication of leukemia early Saturday morning Sept. 26, 2009.
A memorial service celebrating Doris' life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lyle Hamilton will preside in the service.
Doris was born in Flora, Ill., Oct. 1, 1939, to Gaylord Andrew and Bonnie Eileen (Frank) Gill. She attended and graduated from Clay County High School in Clay City, Ill. Doris and Jack Poppe were married Nov. 29, 1957, in Shawneetown, Ky.
Jack preceded her in death Dec. 16, 1992.
Mom's Number One career in life was the many thankless years as the greatest housewife and mother - raising her three children (thanks, Mom). She worked outside the home at various jobs in her life including, a room attendant at the Coach House Motor Inn, McDonalds and as a security screener at the Helena Regional Airport.
Doris enjoyed crocheting, camping at her beloved Vigilante Campground, being outdoors, gardening, playing board games and cards, especially Yatzee (roll another one Mom).
In addition to her husband, Doris was preceded in death by her parents; father and mother-in-law, Lowell and Dorothy Poppe of Lewistown; brother-in-law, Norman Poppe of Helena; and infant daughter, Vonda Lynn Poppe.
She is survived by her sons, John (Kathleen) Poppe of East Helena, Lowell (Tammy) Poppe of Helena; daughter, Beverly Poppe of Helena; granddaughter, Lindsay Eileen Poppe of Spokane, Wash.; grandson, Connor Patrick Poppe of Helena; brothers, James (Carolyn) Gill of Ridge Farm, Ill., Jerry (Martyne) Gill of Dana, Ind.; sisters, Lois (Dale) Stanley of Clay City, Ill., and Kaye (Jim) Cash of Bluford, Ill.; and four great-grandchildren, Savanah Mader, Max Mader, Trey and Mason Copeland.
Memorials in Doris' name are suggested to the Cancer Center at St. Peter's Hospital C/O St. Peter's Hospital Foundation, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601.
