    • PEKIN - William Hubert Holman, 85, of 2737 Village Court died at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Pekin Manor.

      Born May 14, 1919, in Clay County to William Shannon and Rosa Christina Holman Holman, he married Eunice L. Aebischen on June 26, 1948, in St. Jacob. She died Oct. 3, 1983, in Peoria. He later married Marjorie Eileen Dunnington Fluegel on July 26, 1986, in Pekin. She survives.

      Also surviving are one son, William K. (and Amy); one stepson, Creston (and Susan) Fluegel; one stepdaughter, Cameron Godfrey; two sisters, Kathryn (and Ray) Crackel; and Ferne Barnhart; two grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandson.

      He was preceded in death by one brother.

      He was World War II and Korean War Army veteran with the rank of captain, serving in the European and Pacific theaters.

      He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1939. He also completed additional studies at Bradley University, Northwestern University, Illinois State University, DePauw University and the University of Illinois.

      He was a teacher and administrator at Pekin Community High School District 303 for 39 years, retiring in June 1978. In 1949, he became the boys' counselor and later the director of counselors. He also organized the first driver's education program at the school. In 1960, he was named administrative assistant to the superintendent, and, in 1965, was named assistant superintendent. He also served as principal and was named the superintendent in 1967.

      He was a member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, where he was a former member of its legislative committee.

      He was a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Pekin, where he served on the scholarship committee and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He had served as a member and past president of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Pekin and was a former member of the board of directors of the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce and Junior Achievement of Central Illinois in Pekin from 1960 to 1977.

      He was a former member and past chairman of the Tazewell County Volunteer Court Counselor Program.

      He also was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 916 and was a former member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1271.

      He served as a member and secretary of the Pekin Police and Fire Commission from 1979 to 1992 and was a former bailiff at the Tazewell County Courthouse.

      He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin, where he was a member of United Methodist Men and served as an usher. He also served on various committees of the church including the finance and endowment committees.

      A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at his church, where visitation will be from 10 to 11:15 a.m. The Rev. Gary Ford will officiate. Private burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.
