- Entered active service as a draftee on October 7, 1942 at Chicago, Illinois. Selected for the Infantry, completed basic training, and qualified in the army specialty of Rifleman. Assigned to Company I, 383rd Infantry Regiment, 96th 'Deadeye' Infantry Division in training at Fort Lewis, Washington. Honorably discharged as a Private on September 11, 1943 at same station. Earned the WWII Victory Medal for service during the period of eligibility.
