  Ned P. Cantrell, 90, of Moscow, ID formerly of Xenia, IL died at 1:45 PM Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, ID one week after his wife, Winnie. (They were involved in an automobile accident.) He was born July 9, 1920 in Noble, IL where his parents Roy and Mabel (Cannon) Cantrell managed a hardware store. When he was about 7 years old, his parents bought the lumberyard and hardware store in Xenia. Ned and his parents were active in the Methodist Church there, leading to his attendance at a Methodist Youth conference in the northern Midwest where he met Winnie Calkins. They were married on March 22, 1941 in Pleasantville, IA when they were both 20 years old. Ned tried to enlist in the military with the advent of World War II but was turned down because he was colorblind, so he and Winnie moved to Ypsilanti, MI to help with the war effort by working in the Willow Rub bomber factory. Ned then joined the Merchant Marines and served as a radio operator on a Victory ship in the Pacific. Ned and Winnie eventually became the owners of Cantrell Lumber and Hardware Company in Xenia, which he ran until 1995. He was a member of the Flora Elks Club and served on the board of the Clay County Housing Authority. He enjoyed trap shooting and doing volunteer work in Xenia. Ned served on the Xenia Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years. His unswerving love, devotion and help for his wife and two sons were constant pillars in their lives. Ned is survived by two sons: Mac Cantrell & wife Janice Boughton of Moscow, ID and Gary Cantrell & wife Roz of Denver, CO; four grandchildren: Paul Cantrell, Ann Cantrell, Aaron Cantrell, and Lan Cantrell. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Xenia United Methodist Church. Memorials for Ned or Winnie may be made to the TGIW for Kids program or to the Clay County Teen REACH program in Flora. Frank & Bright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
