- Cornelia Louine Skelton, 96, of Petersburg, passed away at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Sunny Acres.
Cornelia was born in Louisville, IL on March 15, 1921 to Harry Samuel and Kizzie (James) Stanford. At an early age, she moved with her family to their new farm home in Stanford Township, Clay County, IL.
She attended Center School, a one room country school that housed all eight grades. Cornelia attended and graduated from the Clay City Community High School with the first graduating class of the four-year high school in 1938. After high school, she attended Strayers College of Commerce in Washington, D.C. and worked for a while in the War Department. Cornelia returned to Clay City where she worked in the Clay City Banking Company until her marriage to Raymond Andrew Skelton on August 21, 1946; he preceded her in death on June 30, 2008.
Cornelia and Raymond made their home on a farm in rural Wayne County, IL. They were the parents of two daughters, Patricia Pat and Margaret Margie. After retirement, they first moved to Clay City and then to Ocala, Florida. Cornelia was a past Matron of Magnolia Chapter #140 Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Zif Baptist Church, a charter member of the Clay County Genealogy Society, and a member of the Richland County Genealogy Society.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; four sisters, Virginia Wraase, Madge Crackel, Dorothy Bufkin, and Kizzie Faye Zook; and son-in-law Jim Bogle.
She is survived by her daughters, Pat Wood of Petersburg and Margie Bogle of Flora; four grandchildren, Amy (Rase) Sherwood, Lori (Todd) Krueger, Erica (Andrew) Sponsler and Joe Wood; and six great-grandchildren, Kaytlin Sherwood, Rase Sherwood, Jr., Alex Sponsler, Isabella Krueger, Kendall Sponsler and Jacob Krueger.
Cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.
