  He had worked in the oil fields, served with the U. S. Navy on the USS Pivot as a sweeper and the USS Helena during World War II in the Pacific. In the early 1950's he worked at E. J. Transport in E. St. Louis and lived in Washington Park. He then drove over-the-road for Cerro Cooper in Sauget, retiring in 1985. He loved college basketball, especially the Fighting Illini, country music, reading, and traveling to Owensboro and Paducah, Ky, to watch country-western shows.
