- Roscoe L. Bates, 92, of Clay City, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Burgin Manor in Olney.
Mr. Bates was born April 2, 1918, in Claremont, the son of Wallace and Oretta (Pierce) Bates. He married Lois J. Hubble on November 14, 1938, in Fairfield. She survives.
He was past owner/operator of Bates Repair Shop in Clay City. He was a member of Clay City Community Baptist Church and was a founding deacon of the church. He was a Mason and member of Flora Masonic Lodge #204 AF&AM for 63 years. He was a member of Belleville Consistory, Ainad Temple, Clay County Widget Patrol, Clay City Eastern Star, Clay City Civil Defense, and past member and chief of Clay City Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, singing at the camp-sight and participating in the Widget patrol.
Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Lois Bates, of Clay City; two sons, Donald L. Bates and his wife, Rhonda, of Houston, Texas, and Thomas E. Bates and his wife, Deborah, of Clay City; one brother, Fred Bates and his wife, Edith, of Danville; nine grandchildren; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Oretta Bates, one daughter, Martha Jean Wright, and an infant twin sister.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. with Masonic rites at 8 p.m. Friday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Clay City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Clay City Community Baptist Church Building Fund.
