  Melvin Doyle Levitt of Hudson, FL formerly of Sailor Springs, IL went to be with the Lord on February 15, 1999 at his home in Hudson. Doyle was born November 12, 1927 in Sailor Springs, IL the only son of Eldridge Jennings (E.J.) and Cecilia (Fischer) Levitt of Sailor Springs. Doyle's parents and only sister, Marcella L. (Levitt) Hockman predeceased him. He was a prominent farmer on Levitt Prairie, east of Sailor Springs. The Levitt family were the first settlers in Pixley Township, Clay County, IL in the 1820's. He was a member of the Sailor Springs Christian Church and Sailor Springs American Legion Post #230. Doyle helped in the construction of the Sailor Springs American Legion and the worship service sign at the Sailor Springs Christian Church. He enjoyed playing music on the guitar at the Sailor Springs American Legion with many friends and family. He and his wife Helen moved to Florida in 1969. Doyle owned a construction crane business and a mobile home park in Hudson, FL. In Florida, he was a member of the First Christian Church of Bayonet Point, Port Richey, FL and Florida VFW Post 10303. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific War Theater during World War II. He worked on a Navy rescue boat that rescued men and women whose planes were downed in the ocean on their flights from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii. He was later a Patrol Boat (P.T.) mechanic on Johnson Island west of Hawaii at the end of World War II. Doyle was a member of the P.T. Boat Association and enjoyed talking about this aspect of being in the Navy. Doyle's survivors are his beloved wife Helen Viola (Hale) Levitt (until 2012) and five children: Cheryl (Wesley) (Levitt) Miller; Joel Nelson Levitt; Noel (Diane) "Thomas" Levitt; Cecile (Levitt) Reppert; and Burcham Levitt. The grandchildren are Lisa (Rhett) (Miller) Kermicle, Sean Miller, Joellen Levitt, Joshua Levitt, Abraham Reppert, Daniel Reppert, John Reppert, Adam Reppert, Matthew Reppert and one great-grandchild Katlyn Kermicle. Also surviving is a nephew, John D. (Marla) Hockman of Olney, IL and twenty-five additional nieces and nephews. Doyle was deeply loved and will be forever remembered by his family and friends in Illinois, Tennessee, and Florida. A graveside service for Melvin "Doyle" Levitt will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Dillman Cemetery, west of Sailor Springs, IL. Military honors will be presented at the conclusion of the service. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, to please make donations to the American Legion, 55 W.
