- Entered active service as a draftee on April 14, 1941. Departed the Continental U.S. on April 30, 1942 bound for the European Theater of Operations. Saw action in the Tunisian, Sicilian, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno Campaigns; eventually as a rifle squad leader. Returned to the U.S. on August 4, 1944. Earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, The American Campaign Medal, The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze battle stars, The WWII Victory Medal and The Good Conduct Medal. Honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant from Company B, 133rd Battalion at Camp Livingston, Louisiana on August 8, 1945.
