- Deretha Geier, 100, passed away on September 17, 2024, in Olney, IL.
Deretha Geier was born on July 8, 1924 in Clay County, IL, to Ferdinand Kessler and Stella (Dorn) Kessler.
Deretha worked hard during her life. She grew up on the family farm in rural Clay County and in 1944, at age nineteen, she was working at the International Shoe Company-Olney. World War II was in high gear and Deretha felt the need to do her part to help the boys overseas. With the help of an Aunt and Uncle, she became employed as a Rosie the Riveter living in Wayne, Michigan in government housing and working 30 miles away at the Willow Run Airport Factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan through the summer of 1944. She worked as an electrician and later worked in Evansville, Indiana countersinking rivets during construction of B-24 "Liberator" bombers. Upon marriage, she worked on her family farm and later also worked as an office cleaner and nurse's aide. Throughout her life, she enjoyed gardening, making quilts, doing yard-work, and tending to her garden, trees, and shrub.
Deretha is survived by son, Joseph Geier and wife, Deb of Noble; daughter, Anne Hahn and husband, Ken of Olney; son, Keith Geier and wife, Sue of Columbia, TN; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and a sister.
The Graveside Service for Deretha Geier will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Crest Haven Cemetery. A time for visitation will be from 9:30-10:00 am at the cemetery.
Burial will take place following services at Crest Haven Cemetery, Claremont, IL.
Memorial donations can be made in Deretha's name to Claws and Paws.
