    On Veterans' Day, 2005, the city of Flora, Illinois dedicated a memorial to all known Clay County, Illinois World War II Veterans.

    Located on the south side of the city library, this is a copy of the brochure honoring that event.

    • Clarence R. Depoister, 88, of Effingham, formerly of Laclede, died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2008, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

      Mr. Depoister was born Aug. 4, 1919, in Clay County, the son of Sherman and Minnie (Lay) Depoister. He married Juanita Reinhardt on Sept. 12, 1945, in Mason.

      He was a retired highway maintainer for the state of Illinois and was a member of Edgewood American Legion and past committeeman. He was U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.

      Surviving are his wife, Juanita; daughters, Judy (husband, Leroy) Lane-Krone, Geraldine Metcalf, and Connie Hoover; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vernie, Roscoe, Roy and Oscar; and sisters, Annabell Depoister, Flossie Long and Olie Long.

      Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pagel Funeral Home, Edgewood. The Rev. Judy Poe will officiate.

      Burial will be in Keen's Chapel Cemetery, rural Laclede, with graveside military rites by Edgewood American Legion Post 1168.

      Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

      Memorials may be made to donor's choice or Keen's Chapel.
