    • Roy Eugene Stanford, age 85, of Flora, Illinois passed away Monday, October 31st 2016, at Flora Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Flora

      Roy was born February 2, 1931 in Flora, the son of George Stanford and Sylvia (Flexter) Stanford.

      He is survived by his wife, Ruth Iris (Dulaney) Stanford, to whom he was united in marriage on January 25th 1952, in Flora, and together they shared 64 years of marriage. To this marriage was born two children who survive: Roy Stanford Jr. and Renee Stanford Jones; and three grandchildren: Erin Elizabeth Stanford, Alex Richard Jones (Julie Kneip), and Max Stanford Jones. He is also survived by two sisters: Ruby Lindsey and Betty Huey (Paul); along with several nieces and nephews.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Wilson, Harry and Earl; and three sisters: Bertha Gill, Gladys Ferguson, and Goldie Goff.

      Roy graduated from Flora High School and during that time worked on the first two Buildings Trades houses. He then worked briefly for Sam Bryden Construction before serving 2 years in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, spending one year in Korea. After his discharge, Roy worked 30 years for Dowell, a Division of Dow Chemical.

      Following his retirement from Dowell, he was a part time courier for Clay County Hospital and Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital in Mattoon. Roy was a member of the First Church of God in Flora for 65 years and loved serving as Sunday School teacher and Trustee. He also served as a volunteer with the Clay County Hospital Auxiliary. His hobbies included camping, boating, and fishing with his family.

      A funeral service for Roy Stanford will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora, with visitation from 9 until 11 a.m. Wednesday morning at the funeral home. Pastor Michael LeMay will officiate.

      Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with military honors.

      Memorial donations in Roy’s memory may be given to First Church of God.
