- Robert S. Brooks, Sr., 86, of Olney, Illinois, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2021 at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.
Robert Bob was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 29, 1934 in Olney, Illinois, the son of Alva Brooks and Edna (Winans). The eleventh of twelve children, he lived his entire life in Olney.
He began working in the oil fields at the age of seventeen and continued working for Calvert Drilling for many years. He then worked as a heavy equipment operator for local 841 until he finally retired at the age of 75. Anyone who worked with Bob knows he was considered to be one of the best crane operators in the state of Illinois. On September 8, 2018, the International Union of Operating Engineers recognized him for 50 years of membership and exceptional services to the local union and his contribution toward building a better nation and way of life for all mankind.
Bob loved hunting with his sons, working on cars, tractors, or anything with a motor. He could fix anything and has restored many cars, trucks, and tractors over his lifetime.
He enjoyed spending time with his companion, Linda, and her family in Casey, Illinois, and had a very special fondness for Lilly, who was near and dear to his heart and considered him her Grampie.
After his retirement at age 75, Bob could be seen every day making his trip to Caseys for coffee, then driving up and down main street making sure all was well in Olney. You may have seen him mowing his grass at 5:30 am at his home on Main Street.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Malinda (Brooks) Valeu and husband Joe of Shirley, IL; son, Robert Brooks, Jr. of Normal, IL; son, Russell (Michelle) Brooks of Olney; son, Randall Scott (Michelle) Brooks of Mt. Carmel, IL; grandchildren, Taryn Fortner, Nicholas (Kate) Fortner, Casie Brooks, Ransom Brooks, and Gina (Wes) O'Dell; great grandchildren, Kennedy Fortner, Jase Fortner, Jack Bertsche, Harper Striz, and Sadie Striz; sister, Mary Stewart; special companion, Linda Admondson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob lived his life as a humble, hard-working, honest man. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by parents; siblings, Charles Brooks, Evelyn Burgener, Florence Skinner, Mabel Black-Holt, Alva Brooks Jr., Walter Brooks, Mildred Head, Bill Brooks, Eugenia "Jeanie" Cantwell, and Kenneth Brooks; and grandson, Dustin Fortner.
