    • alvert J. Craig passed away March 15, 2011.

      He was born September 18, 1918 in DeSoto, Illinois and was a survivor of the Tri State Tornado, March 1925, which claimed the life of his brother Robert.

      Calvert worked for the Illinois Central Railroad & taught elementary school in Desoto until he joined the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war he was an accountant for Standard Oil Company in El Paso, Texas, until deciding to return home to Illinois & finish his graduate degree in education at the University of Ilinois. He taught grades 1- 8 in a one room school house, high school English & Social Science and was Principal of Clay City Elementary in Clay City, Illinois from 1947 – 1962.

      He moved to Tampa, Florida in 1962 and was employed as Area Director of Hillsborough County Public Schools. He was appointed Superintendent of Schools by Governor Hayden Burns, from 1966 – 1967 and was the Director of the student teaching program and a professor of school law and administration at The University of South Florida until his retirement in 1981.

      During his retirement years he volunteered at his church, Forest Hills United Methodist teaching continuing education classes to adults and serving on several committees.

      Most recently he was a member of Lake Magdalene United Methodist Church. Cal never missed a Buccaneer home game & enjoyed spending time with a close group of friends and family.

      He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Pearl Craig, daughter Kay Reid, husband Tom, granddaughters Eden Reid Jensen, husband Britt, Eljyn Reid, great grandson Rett Jensen, nephews Bob Bridges, David Schwartz, Johnnie Lee Robertson, Jack Craig, Dr. Stephen Craig, nieces Barbara McAlister & Candace Lewis & many great nephews and nieces that he loved.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred & Mary Alta Craig, brothers, Robert & Charles Craig, sisters Vivian Bridges & Jane Schwartz, twin brother Dr. Albert Craig & daughter Sue Ann Craig.

      Services will be held at Blount & Curry Carrollwood Chapel on Friday, March 18, 2011 at 12:00 pm with interment following at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park.
