- William Beard, son of Joseph and Malinda Beard, was born in Wayne county, Ill., Aug. 6, 1844, and departed this life March 14, 1926, age 81 years, 7 months and 8 days.
He was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Josephine Martin near Flora, Ill., June 3. 1867. To this union was born 7 children, A. J. Beard, of St. Louis, Mo.; Ida M. Beard, at home; Homer Ishmel Beard, who preceded him in death at the age of 4 years; Nora Logan of Des Moines, Iowa; Gertrude Hoagland of Los Angeles, Calif.; Bertha B. Luse and Ethel Harned of Flora, Ill.
He was a veteran of the Civil war having enlisted in 1862 at the age of 18 and faithfully serving his country until the close of the rebellion. Three months of this time he endured the unspeakable horrors of the Andersonville prison.
He had lived a long and useful life. He was a brave soldier, a kind and devoted husband and father, generous to the poor, and an honest man.
Just at the dawn of a new day he gently fell into that dreamless sleep. He will suffer no more, shed no more tears and say no more good byes. His life was good, his' death sublime and upon his brow was set the wondrous seal of everlasting peace.
