- Donald E. Covey, 90, of Effingham, IL formerly of Flora, IL died at 2:40 AM Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
He was born February 24, 1919 in Wapellla, IL to Cecil George & Iva H. (Lafferty) Covey. He married Lela Root on November 22, 1937 in Rushville, IL and she preceded him in death on February 25, 1995. He later married Elsie Bryan on December 14, 1995 in Clarksville, TN.
Don was a district sales manager for Moorman's of Quincy, IL. His memberships and interests include the following: First United Methodist Church of Flora, member and 32nd degree Mason of Flora Masonic Lodge #204, Consistory, Ainad Temple, Clay County Shrine Club, was a harness horse owner and racer from 1951-1993, a 50 year member of KIAM Rabbit Club and served as a judge and was a recognized authority on Champaign Breed, also worked and mentored many 4-H students throughout the years, authored many articles for the Illinois & National Rabbit Associations, scouted and signed by St. Louis Browns and St. Louis Cardinals and was assigned to Class C Baseball in Columbus, OH with the St. Louis Browns, and he had a lifelong interest in animal husbandry.
He is survived by his wife: Elsie Covey; children: Carol Osborn, Michael Covey, Shelley Wolter, Kevin Covey; step-children: Bill Bryan, Jill McDonald, Jan Bryan & Alan Peterson; brothers: Delvin and Francis Covey; sister: Mary Noseck; seven grandchildren, sic step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, a sister (Catherine Covey), and step-son (Jim Bryan).
Funeral services were held at Frank & Bright Funeral Home.
Burial was in Floral Garden of Memories.
