- Mr. Eldon "Cotton" Tungate, age 85, of Flora, died at 7:51p.m., Thursday, April 4, 2013, at his daughters home in Flora.
Cotton was born January 5, 1928, in Louisville, IL. His parents were the late Raymond & Marie (Tolliver) Tungate, of Louisville, IL.
He attended school in Louisville and graduated from North Clay High School in 1946. On December 31, 1949, he married Caroline Bergen in Louisville, IL.
Cotton was a lifetime member of the Flora Elks Lodge and also a member of the Sons of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Flora.
In 1981 he retired from Spartan Manufacturing where he was a cost accountant and personnel manager. In later years he enjoyed keeping books for a number of local businesses and also worked at the Flora Country Club.
In 2007, Cotton, a.k.a. "The Blonde Headed Thunderbolt" was inducted into the North Clay Sports Hall of Fame.
Cotton is survived by his wife Caroline of Flora, three children; Randy Tungate and his wife Lynda of Lubbock, TX, Mark Tungate and his wife Sherri of Flora, Nancy Buchanan and her husband Chuck of Flora, six grandchildren; Aaron Tungate and his wife Valisa of Ft. Worth, TX, Adam Tungate and his wife Carrie of Lubbock, TX, Kristen Duke and her husband Cole of Flora, Zach Buchanan and his wife Lauren of Flora, and Allison and Paige Tungate both of Columbia, MO, and nine great grandchildren; Luke, Ben, Vayle, Ally, Branson, & Ella Tungate, Eli & Elise Duke and Genevieve Buchanan. Cotton was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter-in-law Pam Tungate and two brothers, Paul & Gene Tungate.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Faith Lutheran Church in Flora.
Interment will immediately follow at Orchard Hill Cemetery in Louisville, IL.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, April 12, 2013 at Byrd & Kohn Funeral Home in Flora.
Expressions of Sympathy should take the form of donations to Clay County Hospice and may be received at the funeral home.
