- Richard "Toad" Therrien passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013, at his home in Newton, Illinois surrounded by family.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton, Illinois with the Rev. Al Kemme celebrating the Mass. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Crain Funeral Home, Newton, Illinois with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary service. Inurnment will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Newton, Illinois with military rites by Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts for Toad may be made to either the Hospice of Lincoln Land or to the Jasper County Cancer Support Group.
Richard "Toad" Therrien was born on July 5, 1942, in Orange, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph E. and Mary E. Chiasson Therrien. Toad served his country in the U.S. Navy for 10 years. As a machinist mate first class, he served in the Cuban Missile Crisis as part of the blockade and Vietnam.
Following his military service, Toad was an industrial painter and sandblaster, receiving his first union card in 1974. He worked at Marathon Refinery, Robinson, Illinois and Newton Power Plant. On Sept. 15, 1979, Toad married Angie Alcoke in Newton, Illinois. She survives.
He was a member and served for 33 years as the treasurer for Local 1705 of the Painters and Allied Trades International Union, Robinson, Illinois a division of District Council 58, South Central Illinois AFL-CIO Collinsville, Illinois.
Toad was a loyal New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan. He loved the challenge of fixing things, helping others in need and being a true friend. He kept in contact with shipmates from his time on the USS Charles H. Roan because "once a friend, always a friend." He loved children and laughing with his wife, Angie.
Toad will be loved and remembered by his wife of 33 years, Angie Therrien of Newton, Illinois; nieces and nephews, Sylvia Winslow (husband, Carl) of Comstock, New York; Joan Smith (husband, Peter) of Milton, Vermont; Sue Chiasson (friend, Joe Fantozzi) of Royalston, Massachusetts; Joe Chiasson of Watertown, Massachusetts; Mike Chiasson (wife, Barb) of Robinson, Illinois; Peter Chiasson (wife, Agnes) of Robinson, Illinois; David Chiasson (wife, Velda) of Robinson, Illinois; LuAnn Brault (husband, David) of Athol, Massachuttes; Bobby Boudreau of Orange, Massachusetts; Steve Boudreau of Orange, Massachusetts; Jason Holstrum (wife, Kim) of Olney, Illinois; and Mark Holstrum (friend, Lauren) of Olney, Illinois; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Becky Holstrum (husband, Jim) of Olney, Illinois; 50-plus great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and aunt and uncle by marriage, Betty and Bob Carson of Newton, Illinois.
His parents; brothers, Leo Chiasson, Franny Therrien, Adlore Therrien and Leon Therrien; sister, Delia Boudreau; nephew, Jack Chiasson; brother-in-law, Alfred "Tic" Boudreau; and sister-in-law, Edna Chiasson preceded him in death.
