Notes |
- Michael fought in Austria in World War II and rose to the rank of Feldwebel (Sergeant).
He told the following stories to Carl Wayne Gray:
He said that he would cry whenever he lost a soldier. He had gotten false teeth while in the army. When the war was over, German units were disbanded and the soldiers got home by any means necessary. As he prepared for the long trek from Austria to Bayreuth, Germany, he put his false teeth in his mess kit so that they would not get broken. The farther he walked, the heavier his military equipment became. Slowly, he began to discard t the uncomfortable gear. One of the first items to be tossed was his leather equipment belt and harness. Eventually, he threw away his heavy overcoat as the weather got warmer. After he safely arrived home, he wanted to show his false teeth to his relatives. Only then did he realize that he had lost them when he threw away his mess kit.
We always got a chuckle out of that story.
He lived for many years at Holbein Strasse 6, Bayreuth, Germany. Due to ill health, he later lived in a nursing home in Bishofsgruen, Germany.
