  He was a member of First Baptist Church, VFW Post 7676 and American Legion Post 512, all of Altamont. Mr. Cannon honored his nation's call for service and was inducted in the U.S. Army on April 22, 1969, and served his country honorably with two enlistments, receiving an honorable discharge on May 29, 1979. He received two overseas bars during the Vietnam War service, both in infantry and armor reconnaissance. Upon moving to Altamont in 1992, Richard was gainfully employed by A & H Implement Co., where he attended, greeted and cared for their customers daily, until his illness caused his early retirement in February 2012.
