- He was drafted into the Army on June 19th, 1969. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He arrived in Vietnam on November 15, 1969 and served 11 months 15 days in combat. He was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division's 14th Infantry.
While in Vietnam he earned the Bronze Star with Valor on February 10th, 1970 for Heroism in Ground Combat. He earned his First Oak Leaf Cluster for Heroism on May 10th, 1970. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal on May 26th, 1970 for Meritorious Achievement in The Republic of Vietnam. He received his Honorable Discharge on June 1st, 1975 with the ending rank of SP4, and returned to the Richland County area.
