    Mr. Smith was born Sept. 3, 1918 in LaSalle County, the son of Wm. H. and Sylvia C. (Travis) Smith.

    He was a laborer for Pure Oil Co.; a World War II veteran; a member of the American Legion, and VFW in Olney; the Eagles in Fairfield; and the Moose in Flora.

    Survivors include two sons, Larry H., Ca.; Joe Dennis, David City, Neb.; two daughters, Mrs. Pearlie (Jean) Scribner, David City; Mrs. Mary Ellen Rich, Ca.; a brother, Donald R., Noble; five sisters, Mrs. Thelma Brewer, Mrs. Carl (Ethel) Crites, and Sarah L. Smith, all of Olney; Mrs. James (June) Brown, Noble; and Mrs. Marvin (Jenny) Martin, Clay City; and eight grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and two sons.

    Carl E. Brewer, 53, of Olney, died at 4:27 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 1992 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.

    Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Zirkle Funeral Home, with Rev. Ron Cooley and Rev. Mark Myers officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m.

    Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

    Mr. Brewer was born June 4, 1938 in Olney Township, the son of Russell and Thelma (Smith) Brewer. He married Judy Garretson Oct. 16, 1960.

    Mr. Brewer retired in December, 1991 due to poor health. He was a cable splicer for GTE at the time of his retirement, having been employed for 25 years. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was a member of Richland Post #30 American Legion, Richland County Pork Producers and Illinois Corridale Association.

    Mr. Brewer is survived by his wife, Judy Brewer of Olney; three sons, Charles "Chuck" Brewer of Olney, John R. Brewer stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., Russell "Rusty" Brewer, at home; two daughters, Catherine "Cathy" Steber of Olney and Christina "Tina Jo' Brewer of Sumner; mother, Thelma Brewer of Olney; two sisters, Nancy Felice of Olney and Sandra Gammage of Farmer City; mother-in-law, Catherine Garretson of Hollister, Mo.; four grandchildren; two nieces and three nephews.

    Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by his father, Russell Brewer, and an infant brother, Monte Ray Brewer.

    He was born September 1, 1946 in Olney, IL the son of the late Carl and Ethel Smith Crites.

    Surviving are his wife, Nancy Wilcox Crites; two sons, Nathan Crites of Rochester, NY; Ben Crites of Jamestown; two grandchildren, Ashley and Johnathan Crites, both of Rochester; and his brother, Roger (Jan) Crites of Geneva, IL.

    A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday June 20, 2014 in the Lind Funeral Home.

    He graduated from Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky.

    In his years of ministry, Roger had the opportunity and privilege of serving with wonderful people in several places. Roger served on staff with Tri-State Youth for Christ in Evansville, Indiana, where he met his wife, Jan (Blum) Crites. He also served as Youth Pastor at First United Methodist Church, Carrollton, Texas and was an Associate Pastor at World Gospel Church in Terre Haute, Indiana. For the past 19 years he has served as Pastor of Congregation Care at First Baptist Church, Geneva, Illinois. Roger’s love for his Lord, his family and his passion for loving and serving others will leave a lasting legacy in the lives of all the people he touched.

    anice E. Smith, 70, of Clay City passed away at 11:42 am. Friday, May 20, 2022 at her home in Clay City.

    Janice was born on March 27, 1952, in Flora, Illinois, the daughter of Robert L. and Belva Lee (Eastin) Smith.

    She graduated from Clay City High School and worked various jobs over the years, such as a butcher, a day-care provider for 22 years, and a cook for the K & R Cafe in Louisville and Heritage Woods. Janice loved to be around her family. In her daycare she raised close to 200 kids over the years. Janice was a collector of Beanie Babies and NASCAR memorabilia, as well as being an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. She loved traveling, playing cards, and was notorious for spoiling the young and the old.

    Janice was a member of the Clay City Christian Church, Clay City American Legion Auxiliary, and Clay County Daycare Association.

    Janice is survived by her uncle, Marvin Martin of Flora, numerous cousins, friends, and her daycare kids.

    She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

    Memorial services honoring the life of Janice will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the Clay City Christian Church with Doyle Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the Clay City Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday morning at the church where friends may call from 10:00 am to 12 noon.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Janice's memory to the Clay County Cancer Crusaders and will be accepted through the funeral home. The McGriff & Triplett Funeral Home in Flora is entrusted with the arrangements.
