    Mr. Hunley was a past president of the Clay City Chamber of Commerce, served three terms as noble grand of Oddfellows, was a member of Venus Rebekah Lodge and honorary member of the CC Fire Department.

    For 20 years, Mr. Hunley had delivered city newspapers in the Clay City area, making his routes each day by way of bicycle or foot. He also was custodian at the City Hall.

    Notes:

    Charles “Tom” Thomas Brown, age 94 of Clay City, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Aperion Care in Bridgeport. Tom was born on June 7, 1923 in Clay City Township, Clay City, IL, the eldest son of James and Marie (Hunley) Brown. He married Vida Mae Phillips on March 6, 1943 in Sailor Springs, IL. She preceded him in death on November 1, 2007.

    Together, Tom and Vida Mae had three children; Shirley Osborn of Bridgeport, IL, Dale (Darla) Brown of Beebe, AR, and Philip (Synda) Brown of Clay City, IL. They were also blessed with a legacy of ten grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

    Tom was a farmer, welder, and inventor his entire life. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, he was instrumental in conservation tillage, working with the Tennessee Valley Authority in adapting to their practices. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, he owned and operated Brown’s Welding Service, working mainly with Union Oil Company as their welder.

    Tom and Vida Mae retired in 1986 and spent many years traveling and camping with many friends and neighbors. They really enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and just visiting with others. Tom never met a stranger and loved being able to help others. Tom lived a long and full life and was blessed with a loving family and many wonderful friends and neighbors. He will be missed.

    Tom is survived by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by siblings Nancy and Johnny.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Vida Mae, and siblings Helen and Jimmy.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Bridgeport Senior Citizens Center or to the County Line Sodbusters.

    A visitation/celebration of life will be held from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Clay City.

    Interment will be in Smith Cemetery at a later date in a private family service.

    "Jimmy" graduated from CCCHS with the class of 1958 and from the University of Illinois in 1963. He went to work for McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis and, after attending special classes in New York City, was transferred to New Mexico. He later took a position with General Dynamics, Ft. Worth, where he had been for almost two years before his death.

    Carl William Weaver, age 82 of Gulfport, Illinois, died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday January 16, 2010 at his home. He was born February 10, 1927 in Olney, Illinois, the son of Carl B. and Ruby R. Hunley Weaver.

    Mr. Weaver served in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1967. Following his military career, he worked at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, Iowa for a short time, and later worked in road construction. He was a member of the former Carman Masonic Lodge, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Flora, Illinois.

    Survivors include one brother - David (Linda) Weaver of Gladstone, IL., one nephew- David Weaver II, and one great nephew- David Weaver III, both of Gladstone. He was preceded in death by his parents.

    Visitation will be from noon until 1:45 p.m. Thursday January 21, 2010 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, followed by a graveside service with military rites at 2:00 p.m. in the Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois. Assigned to and served aboard the Landing Ship, Medium (Rocket) USS LSM (R) 524. Earned the American Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. Honorably discharged as a Signalman Third Class on April 22, 1946 at the Personnel Separation Center, Great Lakes, Illinois.

    Barbara was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing golf with her friends. Barb loved all animals and was never without a canine companion. Barb took pleasure in landscaping the yard, planting flowers and trees, and redecorating her house. She especially enjoyed being around family and friends, and being fashionably stylish. Barb was a dedicated grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

    Barb was known for treating all people with respect and supporting her friends and loved ones with both humor and immense humanity.

    Dallas Jean Franklin Hemphill, age 82, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Monday morning, January 3, 2022, at her home.

    She was born September 10, 1939, in Sailor Springs, the daughter of Roy C. and Doris E. (Hunley) Franklin. She was united in marriage to William “Bill” Hemphill on January 11, 1958, Flora, and together they shared 39 wedding anniversaries until his death May 18, 1997. She later remarried Clair R. Land and he preceded her in death.

    Dallas loved to travel and spend time at her home in Florida. She enjoyed dancing, playing Pinochle, golfing with friends, and spending time with her family. She was strong in her faith and belief in Christ.

    She is survived by three daughters: Diane Hemphill (Trudy Lambird) of Flora, Linda (Bill) Waller of Louisville, and Stacey (Jim) Earleywine of Flora; 4 grandchildren: Travis (Tyla) Knapp, Mac (Paige) Earleywine, Connor Earleywine, and Alexis Waller; 3 great-grandchildren: Adley, Jack, and Zuri, and an eagerly anticipated great-grandbaby on the way; 2 brothers: Gary “Butch” (Becky) Franklin of Clay City and R.C. (Joann) Franklin of Clay City; a brother-in-law: Don Cunningham of Olney; special companion: Bob Dow of Xenia; along with nieces, nephews, and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and siblings: Floyd L. Franklin, Barbara Cunningham, and Mark B. Franklin.

    A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home with Jim Earleywine officiating. Private interment will take place later in Clay City Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.     Mark B. Franklin, age 65, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018, in Clearwater, Florida.

    Mark was born April 20, 1953, in Olney, the son of Roy C. and Doris E. (Hunley) Franklin.

    He is survived by his siblings: Dallas Hemphill Land of Flora, Gary “Butch” Franklin (Becky) of Clay City, R.C. Franklin (Joann) of Clay City, and Barbara Cunningham (Don) of Olney; along with nieces, nephews and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Floyd L. Franklin; and a brother-in-law: Bill Hemphill.

    A gathering to remember Mark’s life will be held Saturday, July 7, 2018, from 10 a.m. until 12 Noon at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.

    Memorial donations may be made to Fur A Good Paws and will be accepted through the funeral home.
