    One of her Virginia Dempsey cousins had married a Welsh immigrant, a Mr Jenkins, and bore a son Dempsey Jenkins. A cousin of his had married a Miss Coleman and sired a son Coleman Jenkins. In the early 1800s the Colemans, Jenkins and Dempseys moved west to Kentucky, where cousins of the Jenkins had already settled. When grown Sarah married John Jenkins, one of the original Kentucky settlers, who had fought alongside Coleman Jenkins in the war against the British 1812-1815.

    NOTES FROM STEPHEN GREGORY "STEVE" LUKE (1947-2002):
    At the beginning of the civil war April 1861, Frederick and Benjamin were living in Leon Iowa.
    By the summer of 1862 they had decided to serve the Union cause and both enlisted in a new unit , I company 34th Iowa. They trained at Burlington, Iowa and in October the unit passed muster i.e. or were accepted for Federal service.
    The regiment sailed on the Mississippi river to Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis Mo.
    Over the next few weeks a measles epidemic killed every ninth man in the regiment, followed by pneumonia which killed one man in seven.
    In December 1862 the regiment sailed to Helena, Arkansas, where a smallpox epidemic incapacited or killed one man in six, while the men remained aboard ship for three weeks.

    The survivors were assigned to Thayer's Brigrade, Steele's Division, Sherman's Corp, Grants Command and on 27 December entered the lines at Chickasaw Bayou (Chickasaw Bluff). For three days they lay under artillery fire and thunder storms and then charged the enemy across a half mile of open prarie in the face of artillery fire and rifle fire from Confederate skirmishers hiding in several ravines. Reaching the bluffs, they attempted to climb them under enemy fire but failed and with nightfall withdrew.
    At the close of battle one man in five from the Regiment had been killed or wounded.

    On the 10th of January 1863 the regiment attacked Arkansas Post, coming to within 150 yards of the Confederate line. Remaining there all night they attacked the following day and engaged tthe Confederates in hand to hand combat.Eventually the Confederates surrendered. This battle cost the regiment one man in four.

    The regiment was detailed to guard 5000 prisoners aboard ship, and took two weeks to sail to St. Louis, and a further two weeks to reach Chicago. The regiment then returned to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. In time for a smallpox outbreak. Frederick was layed low by this disease and on the 19th of March 1863, was discharged as completely disabled.

    Benjamin remained with the regiment, which was down to 240 men from it's original 1100, and in June sailed to Vicksburg, entering the trenches, with Herron's Division, on the 15th and spending 19 days under sniper and artillery fire and patrol actions.

    On the morning of the 4th of July a small group of Confederates attempted to capture a Federal cannon, located 3 miles due south of the center of Vicksburg. Several of the Iowans, including Benjamin ran into "no mans land" and fought the confederates hand to hand. They saved the gun, it cost four dead and five wounded, including Benjamin, whose wounds were severe. A few minutes later the entire Confederate Army at Vicksburg, 30,000 men, surrendered. Benjamin was taken by ship to the hospital at Jefferson Barracks, were he died on 27 August,1863. He is buried in section 33,grave 34
    at Jefferson Barracks cemetary, St. Louis, Missouri.

    Vicksburg was the turning point of the war and Benjamin was possibly the last Union soldier to be killed there, in as much as the surrender took place immediatly afterward, at 10:00 am.

    W.D. Turner Lied about his age entered the Army at age 15 to fight in the Korean conflict. He was killed in the fighting in Korea at age 17 in 1950.

    On August 13 the 23rd Infantry Regiment entered the front line in Korea at the Naktong Bulge, which was already under attack by North Korean forces including tanks and infantry. Each day for the next three weeks the defenders spent their timme either driving off charge after charge by the North Koreans, or hugging their foxholes under North Korean artillery fire and air raids, or staring into the darkness at night interrupted every hour or so by enemy infiltrators who would crawl up to the foxhole line and try to kill Americans with knives.

    On September 1 the combat was especially fierce, the division of about 10,000 men earning no less than six Medals of Honor, a record. During the course of the action Private W. D. Turner was killed.

    Carla was born January 15, 1952, in Tulsa, OK, to Floyd Vance Luke and Bessie Elizabeth (Jenkins) Luke. She passed away January 6, 2023, in Tulsa, OK.

    She is a graduate of McLain Senior High School. She was retired; however, she had worked as a convenience store manager and a waitress throughout her life. Carla was an avid Star Trek fan and a fan of old movies and television series such as the Beverly Hillbillies and the Andy Griffith Show. She was a woman with simple needs and big love for her friends, family and Jesus.

    Carla never met a stranger and made you feel like you were a friend. She battled heart disease for many years and used her many stays in the hospital to witness about "her" Jesus, and she called this her "mission field". Carla was an avid animal lover and would take in any animal in need and nurse it back to health. In years past, when her health allowed it, she worked diligently with the ASPCA and Animal Aid of Tulsa, often housing animals in need in her home until they could be adopted out.

    She is survived by her children, whom she loved with all her being, Corey Juby and wife, Courtney of Hobe Sound, FL & Vail, CO, Rebecca Jolley and husband, Billy of Thomson Station, TN, Christopher Werner and wife, Tiffany, of Gulfport, MS, and Shedrick Herbert Iland, II, of the home; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; 6 step-grandchildren; siblings, Dee Ann Allen and husband, Kent of Blocker, OK, and Charles Luke and wife, Carmen of Weatherford TX; numerous much loved nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many other relatives and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Lee Ready; her parents, Floyd and Bessie Luke; and older brother, Stephen Gregory Luke.

    Funeral services for Carla Sue (Luke) Ready, 70, of Sand Springs, OK, were held Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Chapel in Sperry, OK. Pastor Eli Gardner and Charles "Chuck" Luke officiated, and burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery in Sperry, OK. Casket bearers were Randy Jenkins, John Trickett, Joe Finn, Wesley Allen, Stephen Allen, and Corbin Werner. Honorary Casket bearers were Rick Christianson, Bill Snider, Sr., Ronald Conn, Sr., and Linda Saunders Davis.

    Arrangements and services were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, Sperry.
