Jacob allegedly in 1858, came to the United States as a stow-away on the ship Arlington. I have not yet documented this fact.

Jacob Yauch came to the United States in 1858 from Wurtemburg (Wittenberg) Germany, as a stow-away on a ship, having no fee for his passage. He was 19 years old & soon volunteered to serve in the Civil War with the Co. D. 108th Ohio Infantry.

His unit was overrun in 1862 at Hartsville, TN but he managed to survive the tragic ordeal.

Returning home he met & married a young Swiss girl, Margaret Hasler, who was 19 at the time. She was born in Canton Berne, Switzerland and had come to America with her family at the age of two.

Jacob took up farming as a livelihood settling in Richland County, IL near the Glenwood neighborhood.

Jacob worked hard on his farm for his family which eventually grew to eight children. He & Margaret's first six children were girls; Elizabeth, Rose, Della, Sarah (Sally), Della again, & Lillie Mae. There were then two sons John & Jacob born.

Jacob and Margaret lost four children in infancy including the first "Della", thus accounting for their naming another daughter Della in 1879.

Jacob died in 1899 at the age of 60. He was buried in Hanna Cemetery in Richland County where he has a military marker.

Margaret lived on until 1927, dying at the age of 78. She is also buried in the Hanna Cemetery.

"AGED VETERAN IS CALLED HOME

The Weiler home on Lima Street was saddened Monday evening, January 12, 1914, in the death of their father, Jacob Weiler, who passed away shortly before 8 o'clock, following an illness which has extended over a brief space of time. The aent of the death was received by the friends and old associates of Mr. Weiler with much surprise and grief, as some of them wre not aware of his illness. He slipped and fell on the ice hardly a week ago and the injuries received then, aggravated by complications from his already failing health caused his death. The deceased was born in Schwenigen, Germany, August 24th, 1836, and at the time of his death had reached the age of 77 years, four months, and eighteen days. When quite young about nine years of age, he came to America with his parents, but his father survived only a short while after their arrival in this country. (His father died 1859). The family located almost immediately in Auglaize county and Mr Weiler resided east of this city for a number of years. His entire lifetime since the time he arrived in America, had been spent in Auglaize county. He was unite in marriage with margaret Barbara Beaumel, April 28th, 1866. She preceded him in death thirrteen years ago. Mr Weiler was for 17 years watchman at the Wapakonita Wheel Co., but some years ago he retired from active work on account of his failing health. He is survived by the following children: Mis Sophia Weiler, residing at the hom in this city, Fred Weiler, residing West of Wapakonita and Jacob Weiler of Columbus. Two children John and Louis Weiler preceded the father in death. One brother Mike Weiler of Wood Streeet, also survives with five grandchildren and a host of other relatives. Mr Weiler was a soldier as a member of Co. C 37th Regt. And was likewise a member of the Kyle Post G.A.R. The funeral service will occur Thursday, January 15th, 1814 from St Paul's Evangelical Church at 2 o'clock. The member of Kyle Post will be in charge of the services, with internment at the Greenlawn Cemetery.

Justice of the Peace L.A. Mitchell performed the wedding ceremony. Dellah died at "the Sullens place" north of Clay City, Illinois. There is also a tombstone in the Leonard/Snyder Cemetery, Clay City, Clay County, Illinois which has her name on it. One of the two tombstones shows her date of birth as 1876, the other shows that she was born in 1879. Jake Yauch, 79, of Olney and Clay City, died Wednesday evening at the Richland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Easley Funeral Home in Clay City with interment in Hanna Cemetery, northwest of Noble. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p. m. today.

Mr. Yauch was born west of Noble and was a farmer in his early life. Later he moved to Clay City where he lived for a number of years. About 20 years ago, he moved to Olney and had lived here except for intermittent periods in Clay City.

He is survived by his wife Blanche; three sons, Russell of Flora, Joseph of Kankakee, and Lawrence of Noble; three daughters, Mrs. Eileen Mayhill of West Liberty, Mrs. Bernice Payne and Mrs. Doris Krutsinger, both of Bradley; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A daughter, his parents, five sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

Mrs. Martha Lucinda Galloway, age 68, the wife of Arch Galloway, passed away this morning at the home north of Calhoun.

Mrs. Galloway is survived by her husband, Arch; one son, Victor O. Galloway of Olney; three daughters, Mrs. Irene Varner of Olney; Mrs. Stella Berg of Kankakee and Mrs. Rachel Dowds of Olney.

Two brothers and three sisters also survive. They are: Henry Gray and Glason Gray, both of Clay City; Mrs. Lydia Graham of Clay City, Mrs. Hester Fitzgerald of Vincennes and Mrs. Jeanette Neshibel of Indianapolis. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Schaub Funeral Home with interment at Forrest Ridge cemetery near Wynoose.

The 1900 and 1910 census shows her birth year as 1893, her headstone shows 1883. Her obituary show her age as 68, which would make he born in 1883.

Jasper Gray, 52, of Clay City, died at the Olney sanitarium July 19 of an attack of acute appendicitis. He was spending the week-end with his family near Noble when stricken, and was rushed to the sanitarium. He died before surgery could be preformed, however.

Funeral services were held July 21 at the Easley-Padgett chapel at Clay City, the Rev. Fred Gordon officiating. Burial was in Clay City cemetery.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Stout of Olney and Miss Leona Gray of Clay City; three sons, Carl of Clay City and Lynn and Billy Joe, both at home; two brothers, Henry and Glason; four sisters, Mrs. Martha Galloway of Olney, Mrs. Hester Fitzgerald of Vincennes, IN; Mrs. Jeanette Asher of Florida and Mrs. Lydia Graham of Clay City; his father William; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two children, two step-children, two sisters, on half-sister and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at Clay City Baptist Church. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church with Rev. Brad Harris officiating. Burial will be in Clay City Cemetery with full military rites performed by Clay City veterans. Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Clay City is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Payne was born April 17, 1921, in Clay City, the son of Abner and Lillie Mae (Yauch) Payne. He married Doris Coulter on October 30, 1940.

He worked for Gulf Oil Company and later Pure Oil Company. He also owned and operated the Phillips 66 station in Clay City for many years. He worked for the Village of Clay City as superintendent of utilities for 28 years. In his retirement, Earl enjoyed camping, golfing, hunting and fishing. He was an avid sports fan. He was a member of Clay City Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, a member of American Legion, and past member of Clay City Lions Club.

Mr. Payne is survived by his wife, Doris Payne, of Clay City; daughter, Marjorie Eckel and her husband, Dale, of Davisville, W.V.; son, Gary Payne and his wife, Jane, of Kinmundy; grandchildren, Matthew, Zachary and Krystal; step-grandchildren, Danielle, April and Kandi; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Blake; and step-great-grandchildren, Sierra and Victoria.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; two brothers; and one grandson, Bryan Eckelberry.

Memorials may be made to Clay City Baptist Church.

Selected for the Field Artillery, completed basic training, and qualified as a Scout, military occupational specialty 761. Departed the Continental U.S. on July 16, 1944 bound for the Pacific Theater of Operations. Assigned to and served with Headquarters and Service Battery, 612th Field Artillery Battalion (a 75mm Pack Howitzer Unit) operating in the China-Burma-India Theater. Participated in the Burma, Chiina, Central Burma and India-Burma Campaigns. Earned the Bronze Star Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze battle stars and the WWII Victory Medal. Honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on December 12, 1945 at the Separation Center, Camp Grant, Illinois.

Eileen was born November 30, 1916, to Jake and Blanche Sager Yauch, in Noble, IL. She married Elva Mayhill who preceded her in death.

Eileen lived as a homemaker throughout her life, raising four sons, Jim Benson & Kenneth Benson from a former marriage & Gary and Dennis Mayhill. She enjoyed attending Faith Bible Church in Olney.

She was a member of Antioch Christian Church and was a former member of Mt. Gilead Church with her husband. She graduated from Clay City High School in 1948. She graduated with her Associates Degree from Olney Central College in 1982. She was a past member of Dundas Ruritan. She enjoyed crocheting, working on word searches and crossword puzzles and putting together puzzles.

Clarabelle is survived by her 2 sons Tony Kittle (Lisa) of Dundas and Bobby Kittle (Shannon) of Louisville; daughter Wilma Fitzpatrick (Dennis) of Jefferson City, Mo; 4 grandchildren Collin Cotterell (fiancé Tasha), Victoria Kittle, Silas Kittle, and Will Kittle.

She is preceded in death by her husband Vern Kittle, parents Henry and Maude Gray, 4 brothers Ralph, Johnny, Eugene and Ray Dean Gray, sister Famie Payne, niece Joanne Herdes and nephew David W. Payne.

In the autumn of the year of 1923, on the 24th day of October, when the harvest of fruits were gathered in, Jasper and Mary Gray gathered into their hearts and home in Wayne County, IL, a little blue eyed baby girl.

Awanda Correna Gray, who passed away from this life at the Olney Sanitarium (hospital), April 30, 1937, at the age of 13 years, 6 months, and 6 days.

Death was due to tetanus, caused by stepping on a rusty nail six days earlier. She had a kind and loving disposition with her friends both in and out of school.

She will be missed by all, especially her brothers and sisters.

Her brothers were Lester and Lynn and her sisters were Ruth and Leone. Grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. William Gray.

Ruth was a clerk for the Mark Twain Department of Forestry and drove a truck cross-country for 17 ½ years. She was an excellent crocheter, and avid reader and she also loved to knit.

She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, a grandson; Corey and a son-in-law Al Stuckey. Left to mourn her passing is her daughters; Mary Stuckey and Sandy Zumwalt and husband Brad, grandson Nick and wife Shannon, great granddaughter Madi, a brother; Robert Lynn Grey and wife Phyllis.

Entombment was private in the Mausoleum at Rivermonte Memorial Gardens.

Elsie Leona Rinehart, age 84, of Flora, IL and formerly of Clay City, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Flora Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Leona was born November 27, 1929 in Clay City, IL to John Jasper and Mary Elsie (Mitchell) Gray. She married Adrian Eugene McDowell on October 8, 1948 in Louisville and he preceded her in death in 1976. She later married David Earl Taylor on October 2, 1983 in Clay City and he also preceded her in death on April 6, 2001. She then married Norman Rinehart on June 8, 2006 in Kentucky and he preceded her in death on February 26, 2011.

During her life, Leona worked as a custodian at Clay City Bank and area restaurants, she assisted her husband David Taylor at Taylor Insurance, served as activity director at Flora Health Care Center, and was involved as a hospice volunteer always wanting to help others. Leona dedicated her life to caring and sharing.

She is survived by her children: Debra (husband Robert) Blank, Nancy (husband Paul) Krutsinger, and Roger (wife Glenda) McDowell; seven grandchildren: Tony (Melissa) Bible, Tammy (Dave) Burkett, Nathan Bible, Lyle (Kelly) McDowell, Sara (Ben) Wylie, Brad (Janie) Krutsinger, Tonya (Jason) Toy; ten great-grandchildren: Dawson and Devon Krutsinger, Brayden Keller, Michael and Rusty Mayberry, Ava McDowell, Ella Grace and Jude Wylie, Drue and John Bible; a sister: Ruth Osborne; a brother: Lynn Gray (wife Phyllis); and a sister-in-law: Betty Gray.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, two brothers (Carl Lester and Billy Joe Gray), and one sister (Wanda Jean Gray).

The funeral service for Leona Rinehart was held at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.

Interment was in Clay City Cemetery.

Robert "Bob" Lynn Gray, 90, of Olney, Illinois, formerly of Clay City, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Helia Healthcare of Olney.

Bob was born January 23, 1932 in Clay City, the son of Jasper and Mary (Mitchell) Gray. He married Phyllis Grogan on July 12, 1952 in Olney, and she survives.

Bob worked as a substitute bus driver and a custodian for Olney schools. He was also a Korean War Veteran. He served from August 6, 1952 until May 5, 1954. Bob loved to fish and spend time with his family. He also loved to travel and go camping. Bob will be missed dearly by those that knew him.

Bob is survived by his wife of 70 years, Phyllis Gray of Olney, IL; 1 daughter, Vicky Strange of Fairfield, IL; 1 son, Dale (Dixie) Gray of San Leon, TX; 5 grandchildren, Caleb Gray, Brian Gray, Kelsie (Brian) Holmes, Trevor (Lynzi) Strange, and Andrea (Logan) Walker; 1 step-granddaughter Katina Strange; 3 great-grandchildren, Hadley, Eli, and Micah and 2 step great grandchildren, Reyna and Evan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, and 2 brothers.

A funeral service for Bob will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney, with a visitation beginning one hour prior to service time.

Interment will follow at Maple Dale Cemetery. Full Military Rites will be performed at the graveside.
