    Earl Leroy Slover, age 89, of Flora, IL passed away on June 23, 2009.

    He was born July 20, 1919 to Leroy and Florence (Bothwell) Slover, the fifth of seven children.

    Earl enlisted in the Navy in 1942. As an enlisted man, Earl was one of the relatively few naval veterans who fought WWII on both sides of the world, serving from 1942-1945. He first saw action in operation torch and the invasion of North Africa. Then he saw action in the South Pacific, including the invasion of Okinawa and preparations for the invasion of Japan, which was not needed after the use of the atomic bomb and the surrender of Japan.

    Earl married Jacquie Dillman of Louisville on September 25, 1948. Earl had one son previously, J.W. Slover and he and Jacquie had a son, Douglas Slover. Earl retired from the Flora Unit #35 School District in 1982. He was a hard worker who held several jobs throughout his life and was dedicated to them, as well as life. Earl was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church of Flora, IL for over 60 years. He was also a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge #204, Veteran of Foreign War Post #3999 and American Legion Post #14, all of Flora.

    He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jacquie; two sons: Jerry "J.W." Slover & wife Joy of Delaware, OH and Douglas Slover & wife Debbie of St. Peter, IL; 7 grandchildren: Kyle Slover & wife Michelle of Morrisville, NC, Karla Sargent of Cincinnati, OH, Carla Bender and husband Pat of Henderson, KY, Erik Slover & friend Ama Hapke of Marion, IL, Kristan Slover of Flora, Jeremy Cook & friend Danielle Moats of Flora, and Justin Cook & wife Brittany of Terre Haute, IN. He is also survived by two siblings: a sister, Clara Helen Boyd of Salem, IL and a brother, John Slover & wife Thelma of Flora; a brother-in-law: Robert Hockman of Flora; along with several grandchildren.

    Earl was preceded in death by his parents (Leroy and Florence Slover), a brother (Robert Slover), and 3 sisters ( Doris Slover, Dorothy McGrew, and Margaret Hockman).

    Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday (June 26, 2009) at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Orchard Hill Cemetery, Louisville, with military honors. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Thursday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home with 8 PM Masonic Rites. Memorials may be made to Clay County Hospice or Clay County Cancer Support Group.
