    He was a well-known and highly respected educator, and at the time of his death was Assistant Superintendent of the East Richland Community Unit Schools Dist. No. 1. He has been a school teacher and school principal. Mr. Provines was one of Olney's most outstanding citizens, having been active in many civic affaris. He was especially prominent and energetic as a member of the Olney Immanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church.

    Dorothy Fern Provines, 97, of Olney, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017, at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney.

    Dorothy was born on March 17, 1920 in Richland Co., IL, the daughter of Forrest Maywood and Blanche Alice (Berry) Provines.

    Dorothy earned her bachelor and master’s degrees from Eastern Illinois University. She began her career at Calhoun High School where she was teacher, principal, and boys basketball coach. She also taught at Noble High School, Casey High School, and finally Lawrenceville High School where she taught Business Education for 22 years. For three years of her career, she also served as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Richland County. She was a member of Illinois Education, East Lawrence Education Association, Eastern Illinois Business Education Association, and the Delta Pi Epsilon – Beta Psi Chapter out of Eastern Illinois University.

    Dorothy’s hobbies consisted of working with flowers, playing piano, collecting recipes, shopping, being a basketball enthusiast and “just going places”. She was a close friend of Walt Elmore and she was a faithful member of Eureka Church of Christ.

    Dorothy is survived by several cousins.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Marshall Provines.

    Memorials can be made to Eureka Church of Christ.

    Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home, with visitation one hour preceding the service. Burial will be in Shiloh #1 Cemetery south of Claremont.

    Marshall E. Provines, 89, of Olney, died at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.

    Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 3, at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney. Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 4, with Brother Ben Woollard officiating. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery in rural Berryville.

    Mr. Provines was born on March 16, 1921, the son of Forrest Maywood and Blanche Alice (Berry) Provines.

    Marshall attended Black Oak Elementary School and graduated from Olney Township High School. He graduated with a B.S. Degree from Eastern Illinois University and a Master's Degree from University of Illinois. He was a teacher at Bone Gap and Fairfield High School and then came to teach his last 27 years at East Richland High School. He taught math and later became Assistant Principal.

    He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was in the Signal Corps, sorting and carrying mail to different camps. He served 39 months, including 17 months in the European Theater (October 1942 to January 1946).

    He loved to travel. After his Army service, he and his sister, dad and mother spent the summer vacations traveling. His goal was to visit the state capitals. They visited all 48 states (and capitals), went to Canada, old Mexico, and Mackinac Island.

    He loved teaching and being around students. He was an avid fan of all ERHS sports, especially basketball and football. He kept score for many of the basketball games. He never missed a game in town or out of town.

    He was a great Cubs fan ever since he was 14 years old. He always said, "Once a Cub always a Cub," win or lose.

    Marshall was an avid golf player. He and his buddies would play about four times a week at home or elsewhere for the last 40 years. Marshall was excited when he made his first-ever hole-in-one at Richland Country Club.

    Marshall enjoyed eating at different restaurants. He especially liked going to McDonald's for breakfast to have coffee and his usual sausage biscuit with onion and mustard.

    He was very good in drawing plans of buildings. He spent countless hours in designing the Eureka Church of Christ. He loved his church and was faithful in attendance. He was treasurer for the congregation for 40 years. He was very faithful to his God and church. As a young adult, Marshall was baptized at Eureka Church of Christ, south of Claremont.

    He was a member of Richland County Farm Bureau, American Legion, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, and IRTA.

    Marshall also drew plans for the home where he lived on East Frontage Lane. He was very good in selecting all the things that made a beautiful home. He loved living there.

    Mr. Provines is survived by his sister, Dorothy Fern Provines, of Olney; and several cousins.

    He was preceded in death by his parents.
