    Notes:

    Melvin W. Zerkel, 88, of Maryville, died at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

    Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Herr Funeral Home in Collinsville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Meadow Heights Baptist Church in Collinsville with Reverend Jim Donahue officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery in Fairview Heights.

    Mr. Zerkel was born January 5, 1922, in Noble, the son of Clarna and Agnes (Gross) Zerkel. He married Elen Durham on March 20, 1954. She survives.

    He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a POW at the end of the war. He received the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was a member of Meadow Heights Baptist Church in Collinsville.

    Mr. Zerkel is survived by his wife, Elen Zerkel, of Maryville; son, Randal (Kalene) Zerkel, of Greenville; daughter, Elena (Dean) Pabst, of Normal; daughter, Carolyn (Greg) Sutter, of O'Fallon; son, Dennis (Leann) Zerkel, of Glen Carbon; sister, Ruth Clinton, of Olney; 10 grandchildren, Amanda and Emily Zerkel, Heather (John) Anderson, Joel (Rebecca) Pabst, Rachel (Zack) Barnett, Melanie, Jordan and Taylor Sutter, Emelia (Justin) Proctor and Michael Zerkel; and two great-grandchildren, Stella and Gabriel Pabst.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarna and Agnes Zerkel, and one brother, Herbert.

    Notes:

    Ruth H. Clinton, 90, of Olney passed away Sunday evening, October 25, 2020 from complications of Covid-19 at Richland Nursing & Rehab in Olney.

    Ruth Helen (Zerkel) Clinton was born on June 2, 1930 in Clay County to Clarna G. and Agnes (Gross) Zerkel.

    She attended Pleasant Dale country school in Pixley Township, Clay County. She also attended Noble High School.

    After graduation in 1948, she worked at Clay County Farm Bureau in Louisville, IL until her marriage to James T. Clinton on March 30, 1951. She lived in Noble, IL until July 1982 when she and James moved to Olney.

    Ruth was a very talented seamstress and passed on her love of sewing to both of her daughters. She worked at Musgrove Apparel doing alterations for 7 years and did clothing alterations at home for 20 years. She also worked at Kex Products for 18 years.

    She was a long-time member of Freedom Baptist Church north of Noble, where she served as pianist for several years.
    Her children have many fond memories of sitting with her at the piano, singing church hymns and children’s songs.

    Ruth was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making big meals for her family. Her children and many others especially loved her homemade pies.

    Her husband James (Jim) Taylor Clinton preceded her in death on May 10, 2012.

    She is survived by son Richard (Karen) of Olney, daughter Janice of Olney, daughter Brenda (Steve) Francis of Olney, and son Paul D. (Sherry) of Wheeler, IL.

    Five grandchildren: Eric Francis, David (Dawn) Francis and Amy (Ben) Snowden, Abby (Dustin) Phillips, and Taylor Clinton. Two step-grandchildren: Tom (Angela) Courtney and Allen (Lena) Courtney

    Five great -grandchildren: Emmett and Auri Francis, Rhett and Beckett Phillips, and Murphy Snowden. Seven step-great-grandchildren: Hailey and Emalee Courtney, and Shyam, Brooklyn, and Madison Courtney. She is also survived by 2 nephews and 2 nieces.

    Besides her husband James, she was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Corporal Herbert Zerkel and brother, Melvin Zerkel.

    Memorials in Ruth’s honor can be made to Carmi Baptist Children’s Home, c/o Freedom Baptist Church.

    There will be a Drive Thru Visitation from 12-1 PM at Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home. A private family service will be held at 1:00 PM. Burial will be at the North Freedom Cemetery following the service.

    Family and friends are invited to attend the graveside service at North Freedom Cemetery. Anyone wishing to attend the burial service is requested to wear a mask and maintain social distancing, per the family request.

    Richard L. Clinton, 67, of Olney, Illinois, died on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Helia Healthcare.

    Richard was born on July 27, 1953 in Olney, the son of James Taylor Clinton and Ruth Helen Zerkel. He married Karen (Rayborn) on September 13, 2020 at Rotary Park in Olney, and she survives.

    Richard proudly served in the United States Navy from December 3, 1971 to December of 1977. He was a Vietnam War Veteran and served on the USS Ouelett DE 1077 and the USS Knox DE 1057. He served in the Pacific Ocean area off Vietnam, the Philippines, and the Hawaiian Islands.

    Richard grew up in Noble, Illinois. He lived many years in Tucson, Arizona and Noel, Missouri. Richard loved motorsports, especially NASCAR, Harley Davidsons, and football. Most of all, Richard loved his family.

    Richard is survived by his wife, Karen Clinton; step-sons, Tom (Angela) Courtney and Allen (Lena) Courtney; step-grandchildren, Shyan, Brooklyn, Hailey, Madison, and Emalee Courtney; sisters, Janice Clinton of Olney and Brenda (Steve) Francis of Olney; brother, Paul (Sherry) Clinton of Wheeler; nephews, Eric Francis, David (Dawn) Francis, and Taylor Clinton; nieces, Amy (Ben) Snowden and Abigail (Dustin) Phillips; great-niece, Auri Francis; great-nephews, Emmett Francis, Murphy Snowden, Rhett Phillips, and Beckett Phillips.

    He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation Rites will be accorded.

    A Graveside Service for Richard will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Freedom Baptist Cemetery with Pastor Chris Spenner officiating. Full Military Rites will be performed at the graveside.

    Paul David, also known to his family and friends as “PD” was born on February 3, 1959, in Olney, Illinois, the son of James Taylor and Ruth Helen (Zerkel) Clinton. He married Sherry Elmore on March 26, 1983, at the First Baptist Church in Newton, Illinois.

    Paul graduated from Noble High School in 1977.

    Paul worked at Prairie Farms Dairy in Olney for 13 years. He then worked for over 20 years as an IBEW Journeyman wireman electrician for Lytle Electric of Robinson, Illinois.

    Paul was a member of the Freedom Baptist Church near Noble, Illinois. He enjoyed traveling with Sherry on his BMW motorcycle, deer hunting, crappie fishing, tinkering in his shop and spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.

    Paul is survived by:

    Wife of 38 years - Sherry Clinton of Wheeler, Illinois

    2 Children - Abigail and husband Dustin Phillips of Franklin, Kentucky and Taylor Clinton of Evansville, Indiana

    2 Grandsons - Rhett Phillips and Beckett Phillips

    2 Sisters - Janice Clinton of Olney, Illinois and Brenda and husband Steve Francis of Washington, Illinois

    Father-in-law - Roscoe Elmore of Wheeler, Illinois

    Paul was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Clinton and mother-in-law Edith Elmore.
